My wife thought i was nuts, when i bought the iLiad. But i could not resist, when i saw the first usable and available eink produc in europe. She has not yet read a book on "that thing", but i am not too sorry about that, so i have it all for myself. But i might get her convinced with the new cybook.

As I said elsewhere, my girlfriend thought I was crazy when I bought the Reader.

When HP was released a few weeks ago and I bought the dead tree edition, she knew she would have to wait until next February to read it translated. However, some kinds spirits translated it in about four days and posted the translation online. I loaded it in the Reader and gave it to her.

She changed her mind completely and now she thinks its the way to read. Since I live in Europe, I'm thinking of buying a new Reader when we go to New York next October. Or maybe I'll wait for the Cybook and she will inherit my Reader, I haven't made up my mind yet.

If you'd said yes the reader would have disappeared ... somehow...

You should've said "Yes (if it's a book)." He might've spread the word, and Sony might be looking at lots more sales!

As to the subject of this thread, I can only say that if I bought a reader right now, my wife would demand to know how much money I wasted on it.

Readers and shoppers

I've had the same shopping experience. Since I have my reader (in my case, either my Palm or my eBookWise), I no longer mind sitting and waiting while my wife tries on clothes or shoes.

Given the back lighting on the eBookWise, she also doesn't complain any more when I decide to read a bit more after she turns off her light and goes to sleep (if I had a Sony, I'd use a little book lamp).

Considering how big some of paper books are, lugging paper just to have something to read is a hassle. And you look like you're being productive if you're reading a reader--unlike, say, a book with a garish cover featuring a chick in a chain-mail bra.

Smile It was her gift to me

My wife bought me this for a Valentine gift this year. (She paid, I picked!)
She thinks it is cute, and always wants me to show it to company when they come to visit. Like a fellow responder, she also says "Bring it along" when she wants me to go shopping with her. I don't think whe will make th emove to digital, she is also very much paper person, but thinks it is a great gadget for me.

My husband won't even look at it because he knows I want him to get one. Just this morning, I told him how he is really hindering me because I hesitate to buy books for the Reader that I know he would read (but won't read on the Reader). We end up paying twice or he has to get the book from the library.

He said that, if it were available from an awards program, he would get it. I told him that AMEX awards has it.

Then, he started back-pedaling.

To be continued......

My wife accepts my love of gadgets as a fact of life when living with a geek. She knows that I like to read on it to help me wind down in the evening, but she has no interest in it herself. At least I don't have to worry about all my bookmarks being changed, or a frequently disappearing device!

My husband loves that I have one. I used to read ebooks on my Palm Zire 72 (then a T|X) and he worried about me hurting my eyes. He thinks the e-ink and larger screen size are much better for me.

I had no trouble getting permission to buy one, though she did laugh at me for being on the internet at 5:48am on July 4th.

My boyfriend is a fellow technophile and occasional Sony fanboy, so he's certainly okay with the Reader, at least in theory (it hasn't arrived yet). However, he did urge me to wait until there was a standard format. But he didn't wait until there was a standard for high-definition DVDs, so his argument didn't hold much water. He's read books online, but I think it will be a while until he converts. But we'll see; maybe when my arrives he'll keep stealing it from me.
