I'm a bit confused about the time, when she was 9-13 years old... The people across from her had 2 cars and the kids were eating dogfood... Which year was this?

This was about 1918 and the West coast of USA. Still mostly wilderness and nothing like the East coast of the USA or London. As for the kids.... they may have started eating them out of the bag when younger and grew to like them as quick snacks... who knows?

Farm livin' is the life for me. Land spreadin' out so far and wide Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside. New York is where I'd rather stay. I get allergic smelling hay. I just adore a penthouse view. Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue. ...The chores. ...The stores. ...Fresh air. ...Times Square You are my wife. Good bye, city life. Green Acres we are there. |

Very nice.
The problem with big cities is that if you want to relax you end up running. |

![]() Norway is a beautiful place to be and Oslo one of the most beautiful town in the world, not to mention the surroundings. The only bad thing is the ever increasing prize of beer! ![]() |

Yeah Norway especially Oslo is not cheap. Every year we come high up on the price comparison list of the most expensive cities to live in. As a tourist you will certainly find it expensive both food and drink-vice.

How did you find it comic wise? I'm more than 70% through and I'm still trying to figure out the comic parts.
Don't get me wrong the story is interesting and it has gotten me to keep on reading but I just don't see the comedy. I see it as a life story, but I wouldn't necessarily tag it as a comedy. |

I thought there was a cutoff date for discussion, no? Anyways...I too am searching for the humor in this novel, I mean she kind of rips on native Americans, there's a part about the local hack abortion provider...are these the funny parts?
This is unfortunate because a few years ago I read about half of Confederacy of Dunces and remember laughing out loud waking up my wife at night; which I typically never do, yet I have not cracked even a smile during this book. I'm enjoying the book, it's just not what I would call humorous at all and am wondering about all the votes. I could see how easy it would be for an old movie script made to be funny, but this really isn't. |

Glad it's just not me for a while there I thought I was humorless.
![]() I haven't seen a book spoiler yet in this thread it has just been vaguely discussions so far so I guess as long as we don't discuss specific parts/content from the book we're allowed. Correct me if I'm wrong pilotbob. |
