I've had pretty good experiences with the linksys routers.

Thanks for the suggestions! I guess I'll have to just buy one and try it out. I suppose that, as usual, it's the dissatisfied customers that write the reviews.

I'm not sure that an iPod Touch will adequately replace my Zod for PIM management or ebook reading, either (my n800 sure didn't do it, although it's great for web browsing), but I can't stay stuck in 2005 forever, and if worst comes to worst I hear the App Store has lots of games.

The App Store has an unbelievable assortment of stuff. Check out appshopper.com to see what's available .

A wireless access point is usually a router as well. I would buy a cheap one and if you upgraded to DSL in the future an integrated DSL modem and wireless access point would be the thing to buy as you use only one device and power socket.

Oops, already ordered a Netgear WRG614 on sale last night. That should work, right? I was thinking maybe I could try it during breaks at work too, to update my n800 without having to go hang suspiciously around the mailroom (the only place I can get a wireless signal). (edited to add: nah, might be a network security risk.. Probably a rule against it.)

That will do the job looks like a nice piece of kit.

A good idea to not use it at work, network people take a dim view of people plugging things into the network.

I was reading about a university where the nurses dormitory was using more bandwith than the rest of the uni combined. The network guys kept an eye on the engineers & comp. sci. people but had no previous troubles with the nurses. When they investigated they found the nurses had rewired the buildings network and were hosting mega large network games over the internet, as well as the obligatory file sharing that goes on.

Thanks, I hope I can get it going. The CD that came with it has a setup wizard that won't run because it detects I have no broadband connection. Netgear has a web page that lets you log into the router (probably a front end to the method you suggested earlier, I guess), but I'm still trying to figure out what to put in all the blanks. Good to know that it is doable, or I'd be tearing my hair out right now!

The areas you want to set up are DHCP server there is usually a checkbox for on or off and the wireless connection. Change the wireless SSID name from the default to anything else.

I call my wireless network "badger" You should put a WPA2 password in also. 8 character alphanumeric password is acceptable for this purpose I tend to use a six letter word with a couple of numbers on the end.

Making progress...I've changed the SSID and password, and can connect wirelessly using my computer, Zodiac, and n800. Security is next on the list. Still trying to figure out file sharing...it may not be possible with the Zodiac (I needed to buy an app to transfer files via Bluetooth, and I'm not sure one exists for wifi since it's not built-in), but surely with the n800...

This seems to suggest you need to set up FTP server software. I would be very careful before I downloaded any of that software. I do not have much experience with windows software someone else may have some better advice.

Calibre can act as a web server, why not ask kovidgoyal in the Calibre forums if he can help you or if there is an N800 ebook reader that will connect to Calibre?

Well, mostly I want to make sure that my network works for something before ordering an iPod Touch...file transfer to my current devices isn't really an end in itself, since I have other ways to do it. So far I'm not at all sure I have things set up right. Will check whether Calibre works with FBreader. Can you suggest any other ways to verify that the network is functional?

P.S. Got the Calibre server running, but I see no way to access it through the local network, and was unable to find any hint online that anyone with an n800 has used Calibre for anything except file conversion and library management (correction: Nate the Great has used the content server with an n800, but there's not much detail). I had better go off and think about all this for a while - right now I'm too confused to even phrase sensible questions.

Tried that last week, no go. I figured maybe it only worked on the Web?

Last time I fiddled with it was last week...something I did made the router change its IP address to something nonsensical... Guess I'll have to chalk this one up to experience.

Here are a couple of screenshots from my ipod touch. The only two downsides to using it for ebook reading is the small screen and the battery life which is only about three hours in my case even with the screen brightness turned almost all the way down.

I definitely recommnd Stanza over the Kindle for iPhone app. Kindle has almost no settings controls whereas Stanza has a few more including the ability to select a different font.

Note: With stanza you can email books to your Gmail account rather than using calibre. Then open your Gmail from within Stanza and download the file.

Attached screenshots: First two are from Kindle and last two or from stanza.

3 hours with minimum brightness? That seems quite scarce. I've read on my iTouch for something like 6 hours with minimum brightness settings (taking planes) and the battery didn't drain off.

Maybe you're running background or Touch apps like IM+?
