The JooJoo appears to be a bad joke to me, not at all interested. The HP Slate however looks very very promising!

Take the JooJoo. It was hyped as well, and as soon as the first devices came out, people started shooting it down, as it couldn't do what what said when the first specs came out. |

A better price than pretty much everyone expected and better battery life. A minority, geeks and such people with a more tech oriented mind set who were hoping for USB ports and a full OSX were being unrealistic really. But I would say the majority certainly dont feel let down, not from what i have heard and read anyway. |

And why would an USB port and card reader (those are two mandatory additions before I'd even consider buying a device) be unrealistic? What I've seen of the Slate so far, it's something I'd like to buy. The JooJoo is way too expensive for what you get. |

Agreed. I was responding to Crowl, who was talking about the extremes. Which, by its definition, doesn't talk about the majority... I'd love to read the first reviews by the average person. I generally read those first reviews for entertainment. They are often really overdone (in either way!)

I'm waiting for the next gen. With various low-energy screens coming to market, (Pixel Qi, Liquavista, Mirasol), I can't see the reason to spend big bucks for a power hog.
Unless you're the "first on the block" type.... ![]() |

Sometimes I am... And the HP Slate isn't out yet, so, it might still have a PixelQi screen! (don't want either of the other two, as I want a backlit screen)

Again people are complaining but can never suggest anything better, Im not saying it is perfect but go on suggest something better for displaying images on that is remotely similiar eg size, battery life, screen quality and that you could actually buy. no one so far knocking the iPad has come up with a current alternative atthe same price much less cheaper! I bet you werent able to recommend to your mum what she should get! now she has nothing when the iPad would have been perfect ![]() |

I followed the crunchpad/joojoo drama a bit, and if I remember properly, Arrington said that it's his team that was devellopping the software side of the tablet whereas fusion garage team was in charge of the hardware.
That review appears to give some credence to his side of the story: pretty nice hardware with a halfbaked software running on it. Oh, well... Last edited by Trenien; 04-06-2010 at 09:34 AM. |

Others have said that for specific functions there are better tablet devices, and the form factor of a 10" screen may not be perfect for all those functions. For consumption of mobile video and internet, Archos have excellent devices available with larger storage capcity and a much more portable form factor. For eReading of books with mainly text there are numerous eInk devices available much lighter and with much longer battery life. For office work and more general computing needs there are many existing tablet PCs that are far more powerful than the iPad, and are just as good at displaying web pages and magazines (better if you want to get into the whole Flash argument). What we have with the iPad is a useful device that compromises across the board on the best possible implementation of each function to present a very clever blend of features in a 10" device, for those that would prefer a tablet to a netbook. It's a good buy now, but others are following in the same form factor, and the end of this year looks like being a good time to compare the market. Graham |

![]() My first response to asking for someone to name a device was in response to someone stating 'there are many similiar devices available that do much more for much less' so i asked them to name one and they couldnt. An eink device is so different as to not really bare any comparison Im talking about a device that is multifunction and is a tablet/slate/pad and ok lets say a screen size large enough to read a non zoomed PDF at standard font size or an unzoomed marvel comic. viewing photos on an archos would be great unless you want more than one person to see them AND if you choose the equivalent or closest match to the iPad archos is currently on offer at $540 so not cheaper at all. http://www.amazon.com/Archos-9-PC-Ta...0562011&sr=8-3 I have asked the same thing twice but its not me ignoring people it is the fact that no one has named a device as there isnt one yet even if we do allow for a different sized tablet. Sweetpea told someone not to get one because you cant put pictures on it, which you can with a $40 dongle and she said the price was outrageous so based on that claim what similiar device can be bought for less? I doubt photos would look good on an eink display! Last edited by stustaff; 04-06-2010 at 09:59 AM. |
