There are very good news for the little ones in the family, if they develop book-mania like us. A quick check through Internet shows that many books by Astrid Lindgren are sold in Italian and they are very appreciated.

Bang Herman has two: Mikael and one that is translated i 4 diavoli.
Johannes V. Jensen (Nobel prize !!!) exists in English but I am afraid not as ebooks.

Me neither. And I never did let myself in a movie theater with a film by Lars von Trier after being through Breaking the Waves. I was with somebody and I felt that I had to sit there till the end. The beginning and the middle part were good, even specially good. But the end ... Never again. For that film also there was a huge following of enthusiasts. But Millenium is really quite good and after the first 500 pages of the first book, that are a little heavy to turn, it moves up to intense and continuous gratifications for the reader.

It's well worth persevering past those first few chapters, imo. Things start to make sense, the pace picks up.

Kindle is full of books I should be reading, but instead I'm busy with The Definitive Journal of Lewis and Clark Volume 2. Managed to pick up 12 of 13 volumes as remainders for the price of about two volumes from Amazon.

And I'll pick out the Novelette "A Talent for Vanessa" by David W. Goldman as being especially good in this issue, and I'm only half way through.

I think that's a very good description. I enjoyed the book too.

Yes, the pace is starting to pick up now, and/or I'm getting used to the odd vocabulary and context (which I suppose is the point of those first chapters). I'm still reading it, and alternating with North and South which is just fascinating in its description of life and class struggles in the North of England in the mid-19th century. Very far from Jane Austen, and not as well written but very very interesting.

Hard times ahead.
With the ball season that opened Sunday (yesterday), the Stanley Cup starting in few days, there will be less and less time for reading, ah progress. The frantic rhythm of modern times. (See Foot Note)

If somebody is interested, I can point out two very nice novels about baseball. Of course the absolute must is Ball Four by Bouton (1970), but it is not available. Nevertheless, Mark Harris wrote two excellent stories in sequel:

The Southpaw (1953) and
Bang the Drum Slowly (1956)

that whas made into a good movie by the same title (1973) with Robert DeNiro playing the half-wit catcher. Both the novels are ebooks. I got them from eReader, some years ago, and I found them very enjoiable, if you like the game.

There is also a new book, The Bullpen Gospels by the now Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dirk Hayhurst. The book just came out. I do not know nothing about it. One might say what about the Natural (1952) by Malamud. With the 1984 movie starring Robert Redford. I put this more into literature than baseball stories. Although ...

Foot Note: Actually, there is nothing against following the ball game and reading. What can be more pleasurable than a lazy Sunday afternoon, spent on the couch with the feet up, a nice book on the reader and a nice game on the tube. It would help to be an octopus, though. One limb for the book, one for the can of beer, one for the zapper, one around the consenting adult, one for the chips, one for a sudden scratch. If one is a squid there will be 4 left, for more contemplative activities. Too bad that living in Europe, I have to be content with following the scores on Internet, late at night.
