Has anyone gotten video to work?

I've tried avi & .mov, etc nothing works. It says the ipad can't play them, but they work on safari (at least .mov does) ...

The iPhone, Touch and iPad use native video of H.264 (m4v)/Quicktime. They will not play files in mov or avi files without a 3rd party app. Those are Windows typical formats. You need to convert.

All the handbrake presets transcode video to iPad fine. I used the appletv preset and the video looks great. Handbrakers are working on iPad presets now!

I've standardized on MPEG4/H.264 for a couple of years now. The iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad play it, and it's the standard encoding used by pretty much all video cameras which record direct to a memory card. The latest version of Windows Media Player, as used in Windows 7 plays it natively, too, so you don't even need Quicktime.

I thought mov was quicktime and thus apple rather than being a windows format.

It is, but it's not only the file format that matters, but the CODEC too. The iPod Touch (and presumably the iPad too) will play both MOV and MP4 files, but only those that have been encoded using the appropriate CODEC (H.264, or something else which temporarily escapes me).

Been watching several films and instructional videos on it since I got mine at noon yesterday.... I had a HUGE collection for the iPhone, so syncing with the iPad was flawless... Am FLOORED, it REALLY makes watching a music video, film or such a PLEASURE... (Don't get me wrong, loved I could commute on a train with the iPhone and watch them..but, the size difference is HUGE, as well as the additional bells and whistles...not to mention I LOVED reading my books on it...) |
