anyone else giving the HP TM2T a shot?
great deal on them right now, you can get one for around $980 shipped with coupon and $200 instant rebate. Fits my needs closer than anything i've found, bit largish but not huge.

Looks nice but I don't think I'd be satisfied reading on anything that is cooled by a fan.

understandable....i'll probably use it primarily as a comic reader and i don't want to have to resize so the overall size should help.

I did look at it but I went for the Acer 1420p which has lighter specs but a much nicer price. Looks nice though.

If you do go for a tablet you might find this useful: http://scottiestech.info/2010/02/05/...-crystalcpuid/ I'm underclockng mine and whilst doing simple stuff like reading PDFs you can extend the battery quite a bit. |

I'm very interested in this tablet PC! It's 899€ in Germany which is essentially a bargain considering it features a Wacom digitizer! Honestly, I can't really decide between the iPad, the HP Slate and this HP Touchsmart. The former two are much lighter and smaller than the Touchsmart. I'm not sure if I would really want to carry around a 2kg notebook all day. Actually, I do know the answer to it, as I currently own a Macbook 13" which feels pretty heavy to me. But the big advantage of the Touchsmart is the Wacom digitizer which would make a great mobile extension to my Cintiq at home.
If you don't care for the Wacom digitizer or any pen input at all, I would rather recommend a slate such as the aforementioned. After all they are much lighter due to their lack of a physical keyboard. |

Software Recommendations?
I've just bought myself a HP touch smart as a dual purpose laptop and A4 PDF reader. Is there any better software than Adobe Reader for this purpose? I currently find when I have the screen in portrait mode that locating and clicking the arrow to move to the next page is more cumbersome than I would like, the alternative mechanism of flick gestures seems far too difficult to control and ends up skipping over a number of pages.
Anything better about? |

Same with CBR Comics. It's FAST, very FAST. Starts in a nutshell. However battery duration is not 9 hours as promised, it is more about 3-4 hours reading at ¼ bright with wifi connected (it seems no power saving if you disconnect it). And the screen is the best laptop screen I’ve ever seen. It’s completely clean despite the fact it has two touch systems over it. However it has a lot of glares that makes practically impossible to read at sunlight or in a porche. |

Are you sure you haven't accidentally switched to the max performance profile when using it on batteries and now it's defaulting to that all the time, I know that's something I have done in the past with laptops.

Sadly, no. And I'm sure because it changes video card, from ATI to Intel and notifies me and power plan is always HP default one. I've only changed button configuration.

I've increased my battery life a lot using it at least under light loads. |

I needed something for general reading, which means books, news sites, PDFs, magazines, on-line reference, forums, etc. Displaying material with the proper layout, formatting and colour is a must have for me. I also wanted it to be able to handle writing, and all the usual computer stuff. For those looking for reasons to buy it's big enough to do a good job of displaying whatever you throw at it, and it's obviously extremely versatile with regard to the software you can instal on it (so no more irritation with e-readers that only handle one or two formats). The touch screen includes handwriting recognition that can convert even my crummy writing into text and drop into into a document. I'm loving it. For those looking for a reason to hold onto their hard earned money it has the usual laptop limitations with regard to setting the best viewing angle. This can be more or less of an issue depending on what you're doing, and where you are (i.e lighting). However I'm used to that with other laptops so I'm comfortable with it. It's also clearly heavier than most e-readers but, again, that's fine with me. It's still lighter than some of my printed books, and lighter than my previous laptop. It's not exactly a Gaming Monster ![]() There's a picture of it alongside some of my books and other reading devices to give a rough idea of scale on another thread here. It's 8 posts down. Click for a bigger pic. jswinden's netbook/tablet thread Cheers, Chris Last edited by ChrisC333; 04-16-2010 at 02:58 AM. |

Are you sure your settings are all optimum - i.e.you're actually using the power saving option, etc.? Or maybe you have a problem with the battery itself? The HP support assistant has extensive information about battery life along with specific tools to check its condition. There's also information about calibrating the battery if that's required. It's almost a case of 'too much information' - there's so much help. It might be worth reading through, as you should be able to get the claimed performance. The power saving option is here: Control Panel/System and Security/Power Options There's also a setting elsewhere on mine that gives you a box to tick to automatically switch to the less power hungry graphics option when running on battery. They all seem to work as they should. Last edited by ChrisC333; 04-16-2010 at 10:49 PM. Reason: Add info |
