Sony devices allow handwritten annotations on Epub books - I had the 600 for a short while. To me that suggests Epub allows it. How much effort it took for Sony to get it implemented? That I don't know. It did work really well though - and I believe it did carry into the computer (If I remember correctly, I could see the annotations on my computer, though am not 100% sure).

It's not like PDF, where you can have a 100% author-intended view.
That's a really good point. I think they said that annotations don't even work on PDFs in reflow mode.

If you made annotations on a page and then changed the font/size, which caused the pages to reflow, what happened to your annotations?

I have no idea - perhaps a current Sony owner can answer this.

In ADE annotations aren't handwritten scribbles, but selected text (bookmarks) to which you can add typed text. Kind of like the notes you can add to a MS Office document. I don't have a Sony, but in the manual I can't find an option anywhere on how to export hand written notes to a computer. Can you do that in the Sony Library SW?

Yep... Just checked the Sony website. in version 3.1 of the Sony Library SW they have added "Enhanced functionality for Export Notes."

Update2: turns out you can only export Notes (i.e. bookmarks, highlights and markups). Which means you cannot export any handwritten text... From the Sony Lib. Help:

"You can export notes (bookmarks, highlights, and markups) and save as a file. You can then view or print the file, or attach it to e-mail.
Click (Notes) on the bottom of the Book page view.
The notes list appears. By default, all the notes are selected with check marks.
To export all notes, click (Export to file) above the notes list. To export only selected notes, uncheck the unnecessary notes, and click (Export to file).
The dialog box to specify the exporting location appears.
Specify the desired location in your computer and file name.
Selected notes in the notes list are exported and saved as a file in the specified location.
"

You could still take a snapshot of the Sony Library window, copy that to your favorite Image Editor and save the drawings as a bmp/png on your computer...

On a Sony device, the scribbles are only shown on the font-size on which they were made. In all other font sizes a tiny icon appears around the position you made the scribble.

We're looking at supporting something like this in a future release. The fact that we also allow the page margins to be changed makes for even more variables (because bigger/smaller margins will also have a differently reflowed result)...

And to answer the other quetions: the reason for not allowing scribble on reflowable documents (including reflowed PDFs) is that if you underline or circle a word it will not keep being circled or underlined on a different font-size.

This is why you should also support text-based annotations such as
  • per-page notes
  • per-text location (think footnotes)
  • per-text span (think highlights from text location A to B)

This seems totally portable to me and you can even survive an export as pure text (think email).

Lorem Ipsum has been [Text Note 1] the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make [Text Note 2] a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. <It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages [Span Note 1]>, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Samsung ebook reader supports handwriting annotation on ePub, PDF, TXT.

I hope DR800S supports annotation those formats.

We fully agree. It's on the roadmap, it just didn't make it into the 2.0 release unfortunately.

Irex posted a youtube video showing the notes application running on a dr800. Nothing unexpected. Note that the 'Continue Reading' icon is now FIRST on the main menu list (they really do keep track of this forum).

this may be a stupid question, but can the iRex DR800 be used as an input device (graphical tablet) since it has a Wacom tablet or there can be added though software?
