I received the email out of the blue the early part of this week, but I have yet to receive my box. When they asked us to sent the 500 in last time I did it the same day, and will be doing so as soon as I get the box and label. The battery drain is a crazy problem, I am only getting 3 days from fully charged to drained when not in use and when in use I get about 20-30 page turns. And the new epub format of their library books is horrible, I hate the justification of lack there of and that nearly every page is "page 11-12" etc, and the time it takes to load a new size or even start the book up after it had drained is ridiculous, it never used to take 5+ minutes to start up. |

I thank that post for seeing things my way. If you don't put pressure on a company you are just a past sale. Got a Nook in, my wife has taken it over. A noticeable learning curve, but for only 'reading books' she quite likes it. Loves the wireless download feature. Almost instantly your book is there. Battery life for her reading style, a week. Hang in there die hard Sony fans, but the alternatives work also and not all e-reader users are technophobes. |

I called on Friday. The impression I got was that they are phasing the returns to avoid piling up Readers. I was told I should be receiving the email and shipping instructions by the end of next week.

I've been reading ePub with my 505 for quite a long time now. Once I realized how easy it is to fix the CSS of ePub to use whatever fonts I want, I was done with LRF. eBooks (even left justified) look so much better with a nice font that has a good weight, true italics and true bold. Font support for ePub is nice and fast. If you embed fonts for LRF, you slow things down way way too much. I've gotten to the point where italics and bold just don't look good with LRF.

I sent my PRS-500 back for the 2ND program upgrade today. It should arrive Monday via UPS 2ND-day Air to Laredo, TX. I had received a free UPS shipping box from Sony yesterday. I was somewhat hesitant to send the reader back, but the short battery life was driving me nuts. I purchased the reader on 10/5/06, 5 days after I retired, to replace my Hiebook & Sharp Wizard readers. I have been reading ebooks since January 2001, and the PRS-500 was , by far, the best reader I had ever owned. Oh well, I guess its back to the Hiebook ( if I can remember how to convert an ebook). I have been carrying the PRS-500 reader everywhere I went for 3 & 1/2 years. I am going through withdrawals already! I will keep you informed on my reprogram progress. |

UPS returned my re-upgraded PRS500 to me yesterday, so it was one week total from door to door. So far the battery seems to hold a charge better than after the first upgrade, and it may just be an illusion, but the page turns feel snappier. The firmware version is 2.0.00.14251. The $10 coupon is a straight Reader store credit (instead of something lame like a $10 off a $25 purchase). I am pleased. The credit is good until 03/31/2011. Has anyone who's had their new Reader back for a week comment on battery life? I was using my (updated but not fixed) PRS-500 and it dropped from 2 bars to the warning sign! Wowza! This from a device that lasted weeks with steady use and no recharge! Anyway, updates on the fix's battery performance would be great. -Pie |

Strange. I just got two emails from UPS and they are shipping two boxes 2nd-Day air, but I don't see where they are coming from. I'm thinking they are for my two Sony ereaders that I had upgraded, but I haven't seen any emails from Sony yet.

Post upgrade #2, I've lost one battery bar since I charged my 500 on Thursday (it's now Monday afternoon) with moderate daily use. Definitely better than before.

I already told my wife to hurry up and finish Twilight so I can send it back (I figure I'll spare her the sheer torture of New Moon and rent the Blu-ray while the Reader is incognito). -Pie

Been buried to my neck in kitchen remodeling work and have been letting my PRS-500 collect dust in a drawer. No time for reading books or browsing mobileread.com. Imagine my surprise when I see a box from Sony in Laredo! I thought they accidentally sent me another reader. This is without prompting (but I did send mine in for the first round of firmware flashing). I give great props to Sony for accepting their mistake! |
