Where is this from!?

I've seen this image before on a book cover, but can't think of the name, and it's driving me nuts. The sad part is, I remember having to read it in school for a class. Does anyone remember what book this is from?

I found the same image at http://www.hobbitfilmi.com/wallpaper..._Treehouse.jpg which suggests it appears in Tolkien's Silmarillion.
