I've only barely started listening to Mary Doria Russell's "Dreamers of the Day." Loading up parts 2 and 3 of Nora Roberts' "Blood Brothers" series while I am typing. We are leaving for a week of cherry blossom ogling and desperate to get out of Alabama, so I need plenty to listen to. And I can call it a business trip since we plan to spend a lot of time in the Natural History museum at the Smithsonian in the rock and gem sections.

I've been relying heavily on audiobooks for the past 2 weeks or so. My eyes have been extra bad and get strained more easily than usual. I can't do any sort of jewelry work, even with my lenses and loupes at the highest magnification. I'm sure it will clear up enough to get back to faceting.

EDIT: I need to add that the only other book by Russell that I've read was "The Sparrow" and it made my skin crawl! I hope this one is not so graphic!

What a splendid book. I really enjoyed it. It is just a little slow to start with, as it has a prolog, and then two scenes in the first chapter that aren't really needed, except as background for later parts of the book. If you find it hard to get into the book, try starting with the paragraph beginning "On the day the world ended Mau was on his way home" in the middle of the first chapter, which is the start of the 'main' narrative.

Highly recommended.

Now for Exodus: The Ark by Paul Chafe. A generation ship story.

Hey All,

Been awhile since I posted in this thread so thought I would update on my latest reads:

First up I read Gregg Hurwitz's Tim Rackley Series(4 books currently, not sure if there will be more.) The 4 books are The Kill Clause, The Program, Troubleshooter and Last Shot. The series was very enjoyable and had some pretty original story lines. It basically revolved around Tim Rackley who is an agent with the US Marshals service. Recommended and I think I will check out some more of this author's work in the future.

Next up was Boomerang by Alan Hutcheson. From one of our own members. Pretty decent read, enjoyed it. Well worth the dollar or two I paid for it.

Next I read Daemon by Daniel Suarez. Excellent read, one of my favorites so far this year. Very original idea and not so far fetched. The technology seemed to be explained pretty accurately as well which was a nice surprise. My only complaint was I didn't realize there was a sequel and the ending came rather abruptly but at least the sequel is available so I can get into it before I forget what happened in Daemon. Highly recommended. Could make a cool movie!

Next I read The Ghost by Robert Harris. Pretty good book which is about a ghost writer who is writing the memoirs for a former British Prime Minister. Good twist and I didn't see it coming until very near the end. A movie is forthcoming starring Ewan MacGregor.

Currently I am reading The Escape Artist by Teel James Glenn. So far not bad, bout 1/4 of the way through.

Well... I just finished _The Stand_. Very good book... thanks to all the recommended it. I rated it 4.5 stars on my librarything.

So... I guess I've got to decide next. I have read three pretty long books in a row now... also paid for them. So maybe next something shorter and/or cheaper at least. Or free.

I feel the next Kestral voyages book calling to me though.

Actually, the movie is here; or was. It's called The Ghost Writer. I saw it back in late Feb. Well directed and well cast although I thought the premise was a bit weak

Yes indeed. I read it when it came out in webscriptions a couple of years ago. http://www.webscription.net/p-663-genesis.aspx

But I don't think it's essential fto have read it before reading Exodus.

Black Sea Affair by Don Brown. Got a couple of his books when they where free at Amazon. So far I enjoy it.

From the Back Cover
It's a mission that could bring the world to the brink of nuclear war. Now time is running out. It starts with a high-stakes theft: weapons-grade plutonium is stolen from Russia. The Russian army is about to attack Chechnya to get it back.

Just finished The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson and, to my surprise, it was better than The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Amazing plot twists and very suspenseful right up the the very end. Am looking forward to the movie opening here in the US

Next Concrete Underground by Moxie Mezcal

As to postpone buying another ebook I decided to read a free one.

So, I started _The Count of Monte Cristo_. I have seen a lot of convos about it... so it was time. I really do want to read more classics so this is toward that goal.

(I really like being able to answer the Jeopardy questions based on authors, books, plots, etc.)

One of the true classics. I can still remember how moved I was by it upon first reading many years ago.
