Seriously, I guess we all determine what is "normal" based around those around us. Most of the younger people I see have ear buds in their ears, listening to music (I presume). But the older people (35+) seem to all be reading books or newspapers. But of course, the commuters into the city are probably not a broad cross-section of the population.

I don't know if this is a generational thing - I always spent more on books than music, starting with textbooks when I first had discretionary funds. Truly, I could care less about the newest ipod, but I check this forum daily to make sure I know what the newest reading device is. It is not that I don't listen to music - I listen to the radio when I am cooking with my DH on the weekends, and turn on the radio in the car, mostly to listen to news about the Cubs.

Yeah I do that but I'm almost certainly listening to audiobooks.

If I'm not reading books, then I'm usually listening to them. Books in all there forms are definitely more important to me than music these days.

Right now it's books, but at times it's been music.

I used to own a shop selling classical music on CD and kept a large selection when I moved on. So we mostly add a few CDs of more popular stuff now. I still prefer the sound quality of CDs over mp3s, but I'm starting to buy a few of them now too.

Over the years books have won out though. We seem to have about twice as many books as albums. The good thing is that you can enjoy them both at the same time.

I think that what Jobs cares about is not so much the book market but the reading market - because they're not the same thing.

The market for traditional books - whether in paper or ebook format looks comparatively static. Where it's all heading is devices that can be unshackled from desktops, plugs and weighty keyboards and bring not just books but the whole Internet experience to your armchair in a light and convenient way. That's not just an Apple goal, there's a whole pack of companies heading that way now.

Books! im not really that into music, I like a bit of a sing along to the radio on the way to work LOL but give me a book any day!
