505 to Kindle
I was thinking about getting the Kindle 2. I've purchased many books for the 505 in the past three years. Am I going to be able to move those books onto the kindle?! That's a very important question....

If they are ePubs, see Adobe ADEPT DRM for EPUB circumvented. Note that in the US, for example, this is likely legal for personal use of ebooks you bought. Once DRM-free, Calibre can convert from ePub to MOBI for the Kindle. This conversion is generally very good, as good or better than the version you get from the Kindle store.
If you bought almost any other ebook Reader, the original DRMed ePubs would work without modification. However, I would still strip the DRM - because it will inevitably screw you eventually. Since the DRM free ePub to MOBI conversion works so well, you can buy a reading device without worrying about compatibility with your existing ebooks. |

Ditto what wall craft wrote.
I have a Kindle 2, but recently switched to a Sony eReader Daily Edition. My main reason for switching from Kindle to Sony was that the Sony can read ePub, which is an open format. Don't get me wrong, I like my Kindle 2. It just got old being locked to one ebook format. |

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I have too many ePub versions. Most of the books are .lrf

I recently made the switch from the 505 to the kindle. No regrets here the kindle is a great device and I really liked my 505 at the time
There are tools like calibe and LRFTools that do concert lrf files to epub/mobi. The shifted format is good, but not as good as shifting from epub/lit/ereader to mobi. One word of advice is to always buy a shift-able format like mobi/lit/epub, even if you decide to stay with the 505. When I had a 505 I use to buy mobi, it was a pleasant experience that I do not have to shift half of the books I own. I'd recommend you shift a book and see if you are comfortable with the results. =X= |

I also wanted to say that if you purchased from Sony and the books are in LRX format, Sony allows you to re-download the books in ePub format. Last edited by grooks; 03-25-2010 at 11:24 AM. |

Most of the classics I should be able to download free from Amazon. The purchased ones might be a little trouble if they are in lrx format.

Oh if it's classics you don't have to worry. There are ton's of readily available classics in MOBI format. And these formatted books are WAY better than the LRF that SONY provided.
You can find MOBI formatted classics at these sites Feedbooks.com manybooks.net (just as bad/good as sony) MobileRead >> You have to format these Project GutenBerg eBooks@Adelaide Last edited by =X=; 03-25-2010 at 12:11 PM. Reason: added working links |

If you were to purchase the Kindle then every book purchased through Amazon will only be readable on the Kindle (unless you remove DRM). Of course the alternative is to purchase a device that can read ePub which is every one but the Kindle. |

The Kindle won't read ePUb files. You will need to convert ePub to Mobi before loading it on the Kindle. Since you are waiting for the Kindle you will have time to play around and get the books just how you want them.

Yes, that's where Calibre comes in for the transfer. I wasn't sure what the exact format was, but I know Calibre has a Kindle conversion that will take the ePub format and make it Kindle friendly.

However, I'm a big fan of identifying the difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. IMO, the spirit of DRM is to prevent us from buying an e-book, making copies, and either selling or giving it away. In this particular instance, I want access to e-books that I purchased from one platform and use it on another. |

No one has ever been prosecuted for removing DRM on ebooks for personal use. It is considered gray area as there is previous no case law to reference.
