I can pretty well guarantee he's not taking lessons from this guy.

Am, I was surprised also. I assumed from the way yvanleterrible writes that he'd spoken the language all his life. Instead it turns out that he's another one of the many folks here at MobileRead who have a clear talent for more than one language. I would have never suspected he was not a native speaker had he not told us.

I've learned English first from television but I thought learning from reading would have given me a more accurate appreciation of the language. I see now that most writers should learn more of their own language...

Yes, there is a slang called "Joual" which is a deformation of the word "cheval"/(horse).
I never use it when writing but it dominates conversations so I'm a staunch defender of it as a Quebecois identity. Especially the swear words; there is such a diversity of them that they're a language in themselves!

My personal vote for a word (or, in this case, 2 words) that should be outlawed goes to "Big Brother." An over-used term good only for fear-mongering, and for taking an otherwise-erudite conversation straight into the gutter.

'Make you mind up'
