Perhaps I should re-read it. It's been some years. It was the first Gaiman novel I read, too. I actually can't say I loved it, and I wouldn't call it a master piece, but it was intriguing. And of course it also helped I'm very interested in Norse mythology - it's always interesting to see modern interpretations of the gods that's done as thoughtfully as this (I mean, not just using the mythology as window dressing).

Thanks. That would explain things. I think that if there's a short story with important plot points or setup, it really ought to be included with the following novel. At least I'm reassured that I didn't miss something obvious.

Looking further, it seems that there is a collection of short stories, A Touch of Dead, but it's over $20, even for club members at fictionwise!

Hmm... at Amazon it's $9.99. I'm tempted. Perhaps before I read the next one.

I had the same problem with that book. I agree that they really should not have developments in a series that don't occur in the main novels.

Almost finished both Happiness Project and my Smashwords read. Up next is the book club choice, and the new book by David Gann.

Views here from many (who I've no reason but to respect) have suggested my opinion is in the minority though, and if I was told that American Gods was worlds above Anansi Boys I'd likely give it a go sometime down the track. Who knows? Sometimes, when reading, mindset can have an influence on me. Perhaps I wasn't in the right one at the time.

Cheers,

There's an audio version of Anansi Boys that's read by Lenny Henry (Chef!) that's very enjoyable. I haven't actually read it with my eyes, but I have a feeling that if I had I would not have appreciated the story nearly so much.

As to American Gods, I keep reading Gaiman because I want to read another one of *those*, but so far (and my Sandman loving husband would probably disagree here) none of his other books really compare.

I loved American Gods, I re-read it recently. I don't remember Anansi Boys very well, but I don't think I liked it as much.

I think my favorite work by Gaiman is what he did with the Sandman comic books, but it's been a long time. I'd like to re-read them too to find out if I still feel that way.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It's been a long time since I read comic books, I don't know why, my interests just changed. But maybe it's time I changed that back

Wasn't the term "Graphic Novel" invented so that adults could read comic books?

How does American Gods compare to Stardust (which is the only Gaiman I've read aside from his comics - the TV version of Neverwhere really put me off for some reason)?

Same here - in fact I think I still have most of them. Loved Dave McKean(sp?)'s covers, too

Stardust is in my tbr pile so I don't know. I can say that I've both read, and seen, Neverwhere. I read it first and enjoyed it, I only recently discovered that it had been a miniseries on BBC. So I watched it, thought it was pretty meh, but as a commentary slut, I listened and learned: Lenny Henry is buds with Gaiman and had the idea to do a television story about homeless people and that the novel was being written on the set of the teevee series.
