"mute" when immediately followed by the word "point".
"orientated", when people say that I always think of potatoes. |

I dislike people who wrongly use any arbitrary noun as a verb. Eg, "medal", meaning "to win a medal" or "gift" meaning "to give as a gift".

Generally, in US and Canadian English -ize is used, in British and Australian English, -ise is used; and there is no real hard and fast rule (except where the word has no alternative ending ![]() In England, Oxford University Press uses -ize and Cambridge University Press uses -ise Going back a bit, -ize is the Greek ending, -ise the Latin If you want to get even more confused by it, try this as a starting point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America...s#-ise.2C_-ize Sticking -ise or -ize on the end of a word that really shouldn't have it, such as incentive, is just creating buzzwords to make the business sound forward thinking and with it, or some other such nonsense. (I know language evolves, but really - incentivise? ![]() |

It would be nice if these three words could be limited to those knowing their proper meaning and usage.

We’re talking taste. We’re talking quality. We're talking no prepositions. We hip!

![]() ![]() I think I'm probably in a tiny minority, but I don't like 'so going' in phrases like - 'I'm so going to buy his next album'; 'I'm so going to get in trouble for that', etc. |

If the Council won't take your counsel, I'll be the first to console you.

You are so right! Again, one of those expressions that was kind of cute the first 397,000 times it was used.

It's usually the second definition of console that gets misused. i.e. My computer council/counsel is frozen. The CD's are in the council/counsel of the truck. We have three game councils/counsels for the PS3. |
