Free book from B&N

There was a message on The Daily page of my Nook that there is a free book available. They call it Free Book Friday. I've owned my Nook for going on 2 months now and this is the first time I heard about Free Fridays. I actually downloaded the book today on a Sunday. The book is titled Dead Witch Walking Free by Kim Harrison. I don't know if it's any good but the message on The daily says it's in the NY Times best selling series. Is it common for B&N to offer free books besides the ones you find on their website?

They offered Flawless: Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History for free, but just for one day (Feb 17, may have been the publication date?)

As a result, I now stalk the BN site hoping to catch other books being offered like this

I snagged Flawless before I had the Nook by creating an account on the B&N Web site. I just finished reading it on my device this past Saturday. Excellent book. Well worth the read. If anyone wants to borrow it, let me know. I am itching to try the "Borrow" technology to see how it works.

If you like paranormal/urban fantasy, it's good! I bought and read it years ago, it's the first in a series.

Thanks Linda. I'm halfway through one book and will start on another after that. Then I check out Dead Witch Walking.

Was the Flawless the novel or just the very long article? If memory serves me right there was a very lengthy article in Wired I believe on that heist.

Flawless was the name of the book, I got it for free, but I didn't realize it was only available for the one day. For what it's worth, I think this B&N blog lists all of the freebie book specials when they come out.

I enjoyed the book, and the series (usually). I like Urban Fantasy when it has a fair share of action, and Ms. Harrisons's books usually do.

Dead Witch has been free for a while as a ramp up to the latest in the series (which is available only as an iphone app, or in some weird format that weighs more than my nook and requires me to leave the house, until April 6. The iphone app is unencrypted epub with audio, however...).

Well if it's good It would be nice if they eventually make the series available in epub.

All the ebook sites sell the books. They just all use different formats.. if you search the net you can find instructions on how to convert the B&N pdb with drm into a non drm plm and you can use calibre to convert that an epub.. formating and graphics are retained.

Not advocating piracy, just hate drm

Thanks for the info. I already do that. I have a Nook and my Wife has a kindle2. I remove the DRM from both formats and convert them via Calibre so we can read each others books.

So, you can remove DRM with Calibre? I don't see how to do that with the application.

No you cannot remove DRM with Calibre but you can convert the format. For example you can convert a EPUB book to a MOBI book using Calibre. To remove DRM you have to use scripts that you can find online. I don't think they like for people to provide links to the programs on this forum but you can google DRM removal.

Can anyone explain 'scripts' to me? I'd love to get the DRM off my B&N books, just so that if I eventually get another device I can use them on it. However, I'm techno-ignorant so when people start saying things like scripts and python and whatnot I think it's out of my league.
