They're all version 1.01, kind of annoying cause you cant tell which is which. I think the best way to tell if you have the newest is open a book and then hit the menu, there's a lot more options in the newest one.

Yes, Delstar (or Delstar's supplier, actually) hasn't seemed to update the version numbers. I've based my updates on the date of the zip file; I'm assuming a newer date == a newer firmware.

Note that Delstar did say, at some point, that newer units will get shipped out with the latest firmware, so it's _possible_ that you have the latest already installed; but I don't believe installing the same firmware again (if you did happen to receive an "updated" unit) would hurt anything.

It's just a normal mini-usb cable, I believe.

You got your Divx file to pay on this device? The manual or literature doesn't say anything about supporting video files. I wonder if it will display other format video files such as AVI or mpeg.

Yes, I'd already tried an AVI file successfully; I think I mentioned that the other day. I'd suggest that Delstar maybe add "Video" to their list of folders, because right now you only see the video files in the "Explorer" tab. In addition, the button layout to control the media player is...non intuitive

Since there are many of these Rockchip-based PMP/MID devices appearing, I would not be at all surprised to find that they all have the same basic capabilities - regardless of whether or not it's documented.

Yeah, what I saw digging around the firmware with a hexeditor. Lots of media player junk left over.

Yeah you look at the ad on their webpage is says its a video player but then it doesn't list any video formats under formats supported. Then again we know how correct the bloody e-book format list was so go figure.

Rockchips rk28. I'm not sure. I saw a few open source softwares in it like zlib and some graphics libs. I've seen where some other people have hacked versions of rockchip media players but no telling if that'll translate to the reader.

Today, I returned my Open Book reader to Walgreens. I wanted to hold out for more firmware updates, but I doubt if they will come along. Instead they make just come out with an updated model. I remember Foxit did something similar with the Eslick. Then the new updates would not work for the first models. After many complaints and months later they finally came up with an update for the first devices. Who knows. If the reader ever gets itself together, then I will certainly buy one again. It's sad. I have never returned an ereader before. I reallly would like a dedicated 5" color reader.

I have a Chinese PMP that uses a Rockchip. It is made by Onda. I don't know if it is the same thing.

I am going to give delstar until next Saturday to get their act together. If the formats they advertized don't work by then or at least html work right then mine goes back...I would be willing to wait a while on the rest if html worked correctly since its my favorite format. Considering someone shipped it with it only displaying text files I am not exactly holding my breath. I have YET to see what "warrenty" delstar gives though at least 2 places in the pdf owners manual it lists things that will violate the unseen warrenty. I think Walgreen's 30 days is all we got people.

DELSTAR PLEASE READ THIS
Many of us "early adopters" are quite disappointed with the Openbook even with the latest updates. If they are like me, they are not considering if they will return the OpenBook, they are considering when to return the reader to Walgreens.

I don't think that Delstar will have fixed most of the problems within 30 days. From what I read here on the forum, most others don't think they will have fixed things in 22 days [from date of purchase]

Delstar please think about this- Consider arranging with Walgreens for a special extended return period. Say for readers purchased in the first 2 weeks, the return period will be 60 days. 90 days would be even better!

I believe that if Delstar does that they will have a better buzz within the early adopter network. They will have a GOOD chance that some of the folks turned off by today's problems/bugs will have seen enough fixes before the end of 60 days to keep the reader. This assumes that Delstar will continue to go flat out during the 60 days to fix things.

I'm sure the marketing folks know how early negative buzz, can adversely impact a new product not only delaying when it will have desired market share but eliminating the chance of the product ever to excite buyers.

The special extended 60/90 day return period should help eliminate much of the negativity and prevent numbers of returns that would otherwise happen with a shorter 30 day return period.

But,What do I know, I'm just an engineer?

The mask was added to protect the innocent

Although I think there's a chance that Delstar may be able to improve the firmware to the point that it's usable (yes, I know - I'm a cockeyed optimist ), after thinking about it for several days I've decided I'm going to return the Delstar as well.

For me, the problem is that I hadn't realised quite how small the 5" form factor is; even if everything is fixed (a big IF), it still won't be a comfortably-sized device for what I wanted.

I think the Delstar is a nice piece of hardware, and it does have potential (software wise) - for someone who wants a 5" screen. But I'm going to look for a 7" device instead

Moving On...

Does anyone have any thoughts on this device? I don't know much about eReaders, but I did take my Delstar back to Walgreens. They refunded all of my money, including shipping, plus $5 for my time (seemed very nice).
