No need to shudder.

Dear All:

Nothing really bad.

What has happened is that we are asking the factory to spend a lot of engineering time fixing this and improving that. We have always looked at it as "what makes it better for Astak and the end users benefits the factory". Let us face it... we have tried to "Americanize" an Asian device. The factory looks at it as: yes... but where are the increased sales. We see the sales coming along fine when we get it just right. Factories look at the bottom line only.

They have every intent of continuing to support the Pocket PRO well when it is a fix of a problem. That is not any worry. The question is the fine line between "fix" and "improve". I would tell you if I was worried and I am not. I think things will work out just fine!

Thanks Robert, I was a little concerned but I shall sleep easy tonight. After your explanation I understand the current issue. Keep up the good work.

Nice, glad I didn't update yet. Any general soft estimate as to when we might see the FW re-released with the fixes, Robert?

Dear Friend Acreo:

It is a great question!

I only know we are still going through every part of it now to find the problems to discuss with the factory.

This was supposed to be a nice and simple "new FB2, newer Coolreader, and .LIT upgrade. Now we are finding that there was a lot they never mentioned.

So, first we find out everything from out testers and those posting. Then we go to the factory. Then we arque a bit. Then they estimate how long. Then they act. Then we test the living hell out of it. Then... it can be posted.

Am I negative about all of this? I take this as a personal embarassment; and am so sorry this upgrade ever was released.

I have heard absolutely no timetable.

I'm not sorry it was released. Even with its problems, I am enjoying it so far. At least I haven't felt a need to replace it with the December firmware or go out looking for other Hanlin V5 firmware (which might be fun, come to think of it...)

One thought, which probably can't be easily implemented considering the apparent firewall between you (Robertb) and the design/designers of the Astak and theEZReader.com websites (with regard to their reliance on Flash):

What about posting new firmware with a clear "BETA" label, and those of us who are brave or curious enough can explore it, while everyone else retains some reasonable assurance that the listed "stable" version will (mostly) suit their needs? A lot of open-source software is distributed this way. The end-user has a choice. And given there are also one or more "stable" versions available for download, one can easily fall back to an earlier version without having to painstakingly archive every build they download.

Just a thought or three...

Excellent Idea
There is no reason that both can not be available aslong as they (the user) ticks the box "I understand that this is Beta software and no phone or other support (except this here group) is available"...

MR people do and want things no ordinary customer does

I currently am playing with Sigil 2.0beta2 .
Things happen with beta software. we understand to work on a Copy

I'm not sorry, either.

I'm enjoying the additional functionality of the Pocket Pro.

I'm having NO battery issues.

Like I said before, epubs, mobi, txt, RTF, .fb2 - these all look great.

I'm keeping this version until (or if?) the .lit version starts to work a lot better than what it does now.

With the DOC on this one. The firmware (BETA) is great in all the formats stated and love Coolreader 3. Have not had any battery issues so far, however, I am reading mostly in PDF and epub and only a bit in fb2.

Robertb,
I would like to be Alpha & Beta tester for new firmware for Astak EZ Reader Pro 5". I have new EZ Reader Pro, and would like to help make it better. I am Analog/Digital R&D engineer with 30 yrs experience, PC programmer (20 years), and microcontroller's programmer (14 years). I think I can be a good tester because I will not cry if my EZ Reader will crash often: I have passion for testing new toys.

Good idea!

Is there anyway I can get this firmware that is no longer on the website... like maybe someone that has it can give it to me? I really want to have better Epub options and coolreader sounds like it would give it to me. Not to mention it sounds like it reads txt and rtf better which I'd appreciate. Normally I'd wait for the firmware to come out again but that could be many weeks yet by the sounds of it.

He is keeping all the versions available.
