DRM locked on Aluratek Libre
Which software program should I use in order to convert DRM locked books to read on my Libre. Just received it today and one of the books I had purchased is DRM locked. Purchased from B&N.
Thanks, Sheila |

If you want to leave the DRM intact, then buy Adobe ePub or PDF for the Libre. These are available from many ebook stores, including the Sony ebook store, but not from B&N.
B&N uses either eReader or ePub with a password (credit card name and number). If you download within B&N's Windows Reader you might get ePub, but otherwise eReader is more likely. The DRM on either one is circumventable, see How can I read Barns & Noble books on my Sony 700? (Sony's also read ePub) and Barnes & Noble DRM for EPUB circumvented. |

Thanks for the response, but you are talking to a novice here. I've tried finding the software and found it on the Adobe site, but have no idea how to install it on my Libre. Can you give me a clue or send me in the right direction?

Is the book you bought ePub or eReader? That's the first question. BN sells both, but Libre will only read ePub natively. If it is eReader, you can't read it as is.
It is a better policy not to buy from BN because they do not tell you what format you are buying. You can buy from the Sony eBookstore, Kobobooks, Fictionwise, Smashbooks, and other small stores that sell a variety of formats. Again, if you are buying DRM books, you want ePub. I like Kobobooks. |

In order to read Adobe ePub and PDF ebooks bought from most sites (but not from B&N), you need to download the ebook using Windows or Mac Adobe Digital Editions. Then you can "side load" the ebook onto your Libre (which already includes its own version of mobile Adobe Digital Editions). For this to work you need to authorize the Libre one time. See Books on Board: EZ Reader Help for screenshots of how to do this. All devices with mobile Adobe Digital Editions work the same way, so this is equally applicable to your Libre as to an EZ Reader.
As I said above, B&N ebooks are almost always encrypted with a username/password based on your credit card details. The Libre can't decrypt B&N ebooks, but there are tools available to strip the DRM (encryption) on a PC. If the original B&N ebook was an ePub, then the DRM-free version will then work on your Libre. If it was in the eReader ebook format then there is an extra step to convert to ePub. If you don't want to fiddle with all this decryption and format conversion, just buy from any of the many stores selling Adobe ebooks. Books on Board is one and (as Desertway says) Kobo books is another. |

Thanks for all of the assistance. I've fiddled around and finally am able to get the books downloaded and opened.
Next Question: does the Aluratek read mobi files? it is asking for a product id. |

My head is spinning.
I have a Kindle 2 -- very happy with it ... but it doesn't support Adobe ADE or ePub. Aluratek Reader Pro is available in local shops (where I can return it) for about $30 less than a Sony 300 series device. Am I right? Aluratek supports mobi and ePub, and ePub DRM through ADE? So all my Kindle mobi files will run (I have not yet purchased any Kindle DRM books)? Does this mean I can borrow library books such as Overdrive and play them on the Alurtek? But sadly Aluratek does not offer a dictionary or dictionary support? That's a huge plus for me with Kindle 2. |

The Libre also supports PDF DRM through ADE. Yes, you can borrow Overdrive library books on the Libre -- I have done it several times.

Thanks, PodPeople. I am still processing ...
JBL is on sale from Newegg Canada today at CDN$139 ... vs. Aluratek at $169 and a Sony 300 series unit at $199. As noted, I have a Kindle 2 and love it; but want access to non-mobi content while still maintaining access to non-DRM mobi content. If I buy a DRM Kindle book, I'm ok leaving it on the Kindle; but I want access to most of my library, most of the time, on any device I select. Aluratek gets me part way there ... but there is no native dictionary. I think I am going to put this in as table stakes. Text-to-speech is really nice ... but still optional nice to have. But the non-lite JBL has a dictionary for CDN$179. As much as I like wifi and 3G access ... I can live with USB transfer, esp. as a secondary device. Let me just say: the ultimate price tag is less important. I am looking for a 6" unit with a dictionary and both Overdrive support and non-drm pdf, non-drm mobi in a single unit. AA batteries is almost an automatic disqualification. With one of these units, will I have opened up to me the Sony e-reader store, Fictionwise, without losing non-drm mobi and library Overdrive? I can compromise: 5" might be okay. But font display flexibility is important (for example: Astak in the online ads I can see has pretty clunky text) -- I'll be reading, after all. |
