http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...-runs-out.html Unless the iPads being handed out are refurbished ones, and not new, this suggests that everyone who wants to can get a new iPad down the road for $99 when their current one gets tired. Either that or Apple are very confident that their batteries will outlast the machine itself, and so can afford this announcement as a marketing exercise to defuse the 'battery not-user-replaceable' meme. ![]() Of course most will be refurbs. On the other hand, Apple refurbs are generally top-notch and indistinguishable from new (I generally buy several Apple products every year and usually look for a refurb first). But I am NOT buying a web-browsing device with the crippled Mobile Safari....

No iPad. Firstly, Apple early adopters always get screwed so I'd never buy a first gen Apple product anyway. Secondly, the Notion Ink Adam is coming out in the summer and that has a PixelQi screen so ought be a better e-book reader. It's also got more computing power and doesn't have arbitrary restrictions on what you can do with it.

I wouldn't limit the "early adopters get screwed" to just Apple. Though it is certainly true. It's always best economically for consumers to trail significantly behind the leading edge. The same is likely true of the early adopters of PixelQi devices.

But it's worse with Apple: They play the planned obsolescence game much harder than anyone else. You almost get the feeling that they're purposefully withholding features in order to add them to later models. In this regard, I feel my money is safer with Notion Ink. Although I will wait for customer reviews of both devices before deciding. If the PixelQi is easy to read, has good colour, and the device has close to the claimed battery life then I'm in! One other issue with tablets like the notion ink is how much support android actually has for the things people will want to do with a tablet e.g. for me I would want to read comics on one and there only seems to be one in development currently.

Would they have really had a bad product if they didn't included .LIT? Would they have lost sales? (perhaps). Would that have been worse than a bad reputation? (no). Remember it only takes on mistake to get a bad reputation and it takes a long time to turn that around. (Oh check the thread on the Delstar Openbook if you want to see another example of release a product with features that just didn't work and see the backlash.) BOb |

If it's obsolescence you mean, well, you get it with anything you buy. TVs, cars, tool and whatever. My kids think I'm obsolescent!!! Fer CryingOutLoud! ![]() BTW We can't preorder in Canada. I plan to get a 16GB 3G... if we ever get them here!

Okay , a few comments, I preorderd a 32 gig wifi only, 3g in my area sucks and I do not want to pay ATT any more money. Yes the Adam device does look like it will be great, but unlike Apple products they have no track history at this point, and who knows when it will be out. as for Apple products, chances are if you want to resell it 3 months latter you will get close to what you paid for it, so no real loss financially, even if an upgade is available 1 year latter, your original will still have good resale value, just get on line and look at ipod touch and iphone prices on ebay.

as for id notdoing everything, no it probably will not, butit will probably replac my netbook and my reader. Currently my netbook is a Acer Aspire One and the damn thing locks up with video and music all the time. So much so that all my music is stored on my buisness laptop not the netbook. My sony reader is mediocre at best, I look forward to backlight, I am guessing the settings for the e-reader part will be good, right now I have trouble reading at night even with the light on it, so backlight will be good for me. all in all I am anxious. With my E-reader, one major thing i miss is a clock, I know it is trivial but it really bugs me. as for the Apple DRM, I am not too worried at this point as I currently do not buy from Sony, I usually buy the kindle versions and use a program to strip the drm and then calibra to add to my reader, while it is a bi more work I feel it is better in the long run |
