Updated the firmware and tried out the same epub I did yesterday to test the formatting and when I do the first page turn it flickers a bit and reboots.

I'd like a choice but mainly color 5" tablet style minimum, PDF & TXT minimum, fairly quick boot.

I know a few of those cheaper epaper like displays are on sale right now for around $150, but for that price it should be color and surf the net.

So there ya go.

yes, thats why i dont own a ebook reader yet

The Openbook was pretty slow to boot up and it was slow opening a large ePub or FB2 (5Mb), and often crashed opening those size files. I don't think you are going to find anything in the $100 range that matches your criteria. And if you want internet browsing, you are probably looking at $250 and up for a 5" color MID. Although you might check eBay for used items.

Updated the firmware and was able to load PDF files on the reader but the options menu and the previous and next page buttons don't function when the book is open. Cover art is showing up in the PDF file.

Options menu and previous and next page buttons do function for text and epub files. Bookmarks are showing up as "SaveMark", "LoadMark", "DelMark ". However set font and select color options are still missing. There is an added Mode function that lets you choose from White Mode and Black Mode.

Clearly there is still quite a bit that needs to be fixed

Well I don't think I can help you then, I saw some chinese multi use devices that do mp3, play avis and do text e-books. They are 4.3" color for 65 to 70 dollars shipped but I think they have a rather short battery life. Fraid no pdf on them... no idea on the boot time.

Actually the openbook to me is fine for what it is @$99, considering corrected firmware in that assumption.

No way would i have bought it @$150 ever

I dont need super open, I just want it on in under 30 secs and a file to open with in 10 or so secs

I just feel & all ways felt, eBook reader prices are crazy for the small amount they are and do.

Ive found some alternatives in my price range, and dont have a problem with used.

Just never had much luck with ebay stuff being what its suppose to be shape wise.

So the search goes on

Did the cover art open in color?

And is the screen glass or plastic?

Yeah i was considering a used smartQ 5 (4.3" screen) i saw today for $99 on Ebay i just think 5" is the minimum for comfortable reading

I have something called a clarion mind, it has a 4.8 inch screen and almost good enough, but besides needing to be a little bigger screen, its shape is to funny holding for portrait mode.

Probably the cheapest devices I know about are the Sony PRS-300 which can be purchased online for maybe $170-$180 and the Hanvon WISEreader N520. I don't know where you can purchase the WISEreader.

Greetings, so I got my device today, and when I try to load in the firmware my device shuts off. Also when I first booted up the device I looked at the battery meter and there's a lightning bolt icon on it, and the adapter isn't plugged in,so my question is, do I have a defective item? Or does anyone else have the same problem?

I think that would be the Jetbook lite... you can find it for around $120 or less. I think newegg is having a big sale on it this weekend. Who knows what the price will be.

I think I have made up my mind after looking around, and seeing all the problems this device has. I am going to stick with my iPhone, and order and iPad. Here is my reasoning.

No compromises:
I can check out books from the library.
I can order books from B&N,Amazon and apple.
I can read PDFs.
I have full color and a back lit display.
I can read it in full sunlight.
I can surf the web, watch videos and listen to MP3s
Integrates with my Mac and PC's.
Displays are clean and Fast.
WIFI access.
Both devices will allow me to do lots of other things.
Apple support is 2nd to none.

Disadvantages
Small screen on the iPhone, but would only use it when I did not want to take the iPad.
Price of the iPad, but you get what you pay for.
Shorter battery life than some, but I charge everything while I sleep, and I do not see that as a problem.

Some times I try to save money and put up with the limitations, and I am almost always disappointed. So I figure I will put down my $$ and be happy and not have to worry about the hardware and compromising, so will have more free time to enjoy myself.
