Uggghhhh I've had my PRS-600 for almost 3 months, Love it. Today was the 1st nice weather day we've had up here and low and behold I had the direct sunlight issue when turning pages. Short story is after calling tech support that they are sending me a refurbished unit. Keeping my fingers crossed that it works and looks 100% like new. Anyway the reason I am writing is to share my experience with their chat read below
... Prior to this was my explanation of what was going on and 5-10 minutes of waiting for the person on the other end to reply each time Me > while I am waiting for you I am searching via google and happenned upon a website that states this is a known issue with a batch of bad screens by LG-Philips. Me > What can I do to go about getting my reader replaced with a known working unit Me > Here is the forum I read it from https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...light=sunlight Sony Support > Okay, I'll assist with that. Please confirm while trying to access the eBooks uinder sunlight the brightness of the Reader fades, is that correct? Me > yes when turning the page Sony Support > I'm sorry that the brightness of the Reader is not enough to access eBooks in the Reader under the sunlight. Sony Support > Hence , I suggest you to keep the Reader away from the sunlight. Me > um no I cannot do that I would like to be able to read outside Anyway. she was unable to help and said there was nothing she could do. lol anyway although it means nothing I feel better for sharing |

sorry I was being rushed. (Family dinner time) After I got off of the Internet chat thing with them I called them up and before I told them what was wrong I asked them a bunch of questions about should I be able to do this and that with the reader and after I cornered them with that information I explained the internet chat and my problem and that's when they agreed to do it.

I got it now. Thanks. Glad they did the right thing. One of the primary features of eInk is that it is readable in full sunlight if it doesn't do that then the product is broke!

Well, I haven't gotten my first replacement unit to try out yet to see if it's any better, I called last Sunday. If I don't get it in the mail tomorrow I'll call and see what's up.

Did you get a tracking number via email? Mine was shipped overnight. If it has been since last Sunday I would just call today.

Allrighty, now I'm mad
So I called this morning. First they asked for all my information all over again, despite the fact that I was obviously "in the system", since the automated voice that answered the call said "Welcome back! If your call is in regards to the same problem as your recent call, press 1." The guy asked if I had e-mailed a copy of my receipt to them. I said no, the first guy told me to send a copy in the box with the original unit. Finally said that they would send a unit out (and emphasized that it would DEFINITELY be a refurb because it was over 30 days). And it would take 7-10 days to get here. I asked why I didn't have the first unit that was promised LAST week and was told that the work order had never been put in
![]() So I'm going to call Monday and raise Holy Hell. We'll see how that shakes out. I'm going to warn them that if the "new" unit is also defective I will dispute the charge with my credit card company. I have this niggling angst that they are taking the units with screen fade that are shipped back and shipping them right out again. |

I called on Monday and after being transferred twice (and dropped once), I finally got a hold of somebody that said that it had been shipped, and it *was* overnighted, but it was picked up late in the day on Monday so I didn't get it until today. Of course, our stupid pathetic excuse for sunlight this time of year wasn't fading my PROBLEM unit today (we had some high clouds and I didn't get to try it until late afternoon). I tried to induce fade with a bright lamp and got my problem unit to fade just a bit. The best test I found for subtle fade was to rubber band a folded index card to one corner of the stock "baby" picture, page change repeatedly, then see if there was a clear rectangular area in the image that was darker. There was for my problem unit. I can imagine up a very faint line of demarcation on the new unit, but it's pretty darn faint. DH can't see it at all, but he says he thinks he's only making up the one on the faulty unit which is clear as day to me.
He thought I was imagining another line once upon a time--THAT line turns six next month ![]() Tomorrow is supposed to be sunnier here, no high clouds. I'll take both units to work with me and check 'em out. |

You know one thing I'm wondering is if anyone has had the fading problem, or been able to duplicate it with really, really bright lighting....I don't know, like floodlamps or stage lighting or sun lamps??

This is one of those "principle" situations, I guess. If they'd come right out and said the thing needed to be shaded during page turns, fine. But one of the big ballyhooed marketing hooks is "readable in direct sunlight". |
