You obviously live close to a Sony Service Depot. Any mention of a prepaid mailer for those PRS-500 owners that are not so close?

Awesome! Please post how it works out for you and the revision number of the new firmware.

That's great news - I think I'll upgrade now

Thanks again everyone for keeping us updated on the battery issue after updating the PRS-500. I decided to sell mine rather than do the upgrade but there's not many takers so I think I'll upgrade it instead. That would be fantastic if the battery maintains it's charge after upgrade. I think I'll wait til next week and see if there's any new developments because we have til March 31st to get this done. Kudos to Sony for at least not leaving us 500 owners in the lurch. This is great news if it be true!! Mary from WI

2.0.00.14251

After complaining about the previous firmware upgrade and sending in my PRS500 to Laredo, I received it back today with firmware 2.0.00.14251. Will have to wait a couple of days to check if the new version has fixed the battery problem.

Sony's customer service was impeccable, like the last time. They emailed a pre-paid UPS overnight shipping label and also returned it by UPS overnight within the week. This kind of support for a discontinued product is rare.

Sony sent me a PRS 600 as a replacement for the battery issue. I have to say I am more than happy to accept the offer.

I'd be thrilled if they wanted to give me a 600, but I'll settle for them fixing the dang battery problem. Icing on the cake would be if they would fix the justification problem with epub. Oh well. Anxious to find out if the new firmware actually fixes the problem.

Wish they would build a distribution for the new firmware. I'd rather not be without my reader for a week.

I'm wondering if there is a reason to send it in for the new, new firmware. There was an obvious hardware upgrade for ePUB, but that should be a one-time deal. Any new update should be a flash.

It could be that they were debugging, and needed a unit in house. That would explain severe lag -- how do you test to see how long it lasts without sitting on the Reader for a long time?

How did you get in touch with the Laredo tech? Be nice to know if they're planning to post it. I was planning on calling Sony and requesting a replacement Reader due to the battery issue, but I would far rather get my 500 back to a decent battery life!

I believe Sony already has some lab rats at hand now since several people in this forum have exchanged their PRS-500 with a PRS-600 (UPS delivered a refurbished PRS-600 to me today). So it's very possible that they've worked out a fix.

LATEST BULL!

My previous call to Laredo was handled by 'Alex'. Was told update had been delayed, that my unit would be done within five working days then Next Day Aired to me.
Today's call to Laredo was handled by 'Charlie'. Was told word for word the same as previous call. Don't care any more, going to order either a Kindle(Amazon) or a Nook(B&N).
