Good luck with your hunt for an e-reader! It's just so difficult for us in Australia (or anyone out of the US) to really get a good deal. I have finally settled on the Sony PRS-600 but I have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a perfect e-reader. It's all up to your own preferences and what features you prefer to have.

Pity that Australia is so behind on the e-book / e-reader markets! It would be so much easier to have a variety of readers available here and sites that we can buy books from without having to go through loop-holes!

Would there ever be something like the "perfect reader" for everybody?

I think the most important part of choosing a reader is making a list of wants and don't-wants. What is important to you to have and what is it that you absolutely don't want to have. Then you go to the ebook matrix (found in the wiki) and see which reader fits your needs the best... And expect to compromise...

There can't be a perfect reader for evebody, and I think manufacturers are realizing that and many different ereaders are going to flood the market.

Are there any imminent plans to actually fill out all the "space holders" in the OP? It's nearly a year old now, and, with every answer to "what is best for me" saying "space holder," this is not a terribly useful thread; I'm not sure why it has a sticky ...

ADDED: I just looked at Gideon's (OP) profile, and he hasn't posted since September, and hasn't had activity here (come to check for messages) since early December. So it looks doubtful that the guide will ever be more than an "empty shell."

The PRS-900 has dictionary look-up and page go to, plus search and bookmarking etc.

There have been plenty of discussions in this subforum though on many units...

You can also download epub format for some books in the Project Gutenberg and Internet Archives.

Not sure where to ask this but what's up with the Ebook Reader Matrix? I can understand ereaders that haven't and probably never will be produced being removed from it but ereaders that are still currently available from retailers have also been removed. For instance I can't find any Jetbook ereader on there. Not even in the 'Older Devices' section. Makes me really glad I'd saved a copy for offline viewing several months ago.

In the wiki there are different wiki pages for e-paper and LCD displays. There are links on each page for the other.

Huh. I hadn't realized the Jetbook was LCD. Thanks for the info.

overseas!

Still don't know which e-reader! BUT, my problem also stems from the fact that I live in Israel and am unsure which ereaders support downloading here. 3G is available here, but I don't know if that pertains to downloading copyrighted material... can anyone help me decide please!!! I'll have no problem BUYING anything, I'll be in the States in a couple of weeks, it's the downloading I'm worried about! Thanks!

You have a PC, obviously seeing you've posted the above; then you should be able to access any number of etailers or the free selections of books (MR being one).
Depending on your choice of reading material, some of the books avilable for purchase may be geographically restricted. (I buy most of my books from US stores - choice and price dictating).
