Can you directly open books in a catalog?
I may be missing something, or it may be by design, but I can't seem to open any books when I'm browsing the catalog. Is this not possible?
Thanks :-) |

I might have forgotten if this was discussed already because it's been a couple days since I read through this thread. Hopefully this isn't a rehash.
I finally got my entire ebook library set up in Calibre and am now ready to generate my catalog. I did a test catalog of just four books to see how it would look and to make sure that I did a couple of the tags correctly. I really like the sections display so you can jump to looking at books in the manner you want to. But I already see that this is going to be very unwieldy with my whole library in there. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to add an additional page that lists genres (tags). So you go to the sections list like it is now and then if you highlight genres you click and get another page that is very similar that just has a list of genres. Then you can highlight the genre you want to see books for. The reason I'm asking is because without that it would take paging through my entire catalog to find a genre section. Unless I'm missing some feature that already exists? Basically I'd like to be able to jump to just science fiction or just historical fiction without starting at the first genre and paging through them all. Hopefully I asked this clearly enough. |

@Jaelle: That's the way catalog generation works - tags are treated as genres, and a Genre Section is created with each genre as an entry. Be sure to leave the default regex expression intact for in the Generate catalog|E-book options dialog. If you delete it, or use a single dot, no genres will be added.
When you open the catalog on your Kindle, open the Sections List, then click the number in parantheses to the right of 'Genres' to see a list of the genres. Or click 'Genres' to jump to the first genre, and use the joystick to toggle through your genres. Take a look at the first post in this thread for more details, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions. G |

Aha! I missed that I could click on the number to get a list. I did another test catalog and it worked dandy. Thanks tons!

No TOC on Kindle 1
Hello All,
First, as a newbie forum member, I apologize for any mistakes I undoubtedly will make. Second, let me say how impressed I am with the helpfulness of this forum's members and thanks in advance for any help you may give me. Finally, my problem: I cannot find a TOC within my catalog. I have carefully read every page of this thread and have tried all potential solutions: examining all tags, book titles, and other entries for errors; creating the catalog with different small subsets of books; and replacing the default regex with a period. This last attempt successfully removed genres from the catalog, but still produced no TOC. Here is a log of my latest attempt, done with a small subset of ten books. Anything look problematic here? Spoiler:

Welcome angelbeville.
The log indicates no problems with the build. After downloading the generated 'My Books' to your Kindle, the catalog is of the same file format as a periodical, like a blog, newspaper or magazine. After opening the file, you should be able to open the section list by clicking 'View Section List' to view the TOC, just as you would with any other periodical file. I don't have a Kindle 1 to test with, so it's possible that there's some subtle difference between the K1 and K2 in file handling. Please try downloading a recipe for a newspaper or magazine to see if you are able to view a TOC with that file on your K1. G |

No TOC on Kindle 1
Hello GRiker, thank you for responding so quickly! And for confirming that my build was successful. At least I know my careful attention to my database content was not in vain.
I have several blogs, magazines, and newspapers on my K1. Most have a link at the beginning to "Articles List" or "Section List." And if a TOC is available, the option "Go to Articles List" will be available from the Menu. On the menu for my Calibre catalog, My Books, that option is greyed out. And there is no link at the top. Hmmmmm.... could the Kindle 1 itself be the culprit? |

Unfortunately this isn't an easy fix.
K2 and DX use a newer file format for periodicals (the catalog is a periodical). Given the fact that the K1 is no longer sold, and this problem has rarely been mentioned, it's not going to be a priority to add support for periodicals on the K1. I will add a ticket to the bug database documenting the problem, and I'll update the first post in this thread to mention that the K1 is not supported. G |

Delete Collections title
I don't think this is in the right place because I can't see how to start a new thread. Sorry. Hopefully someone will answer nevertheless.
How do I get rid of an empty Collection on my Sony eReader eg I accidentally tagged some books as 'Buddhist' rather than 'Buddhism'. I have moved them into 'Buddhism' but would now like to get rid of the 'Buddhist' Collection altogether. Is there a way to do this? Thanks Lynda |
