Pholy, yes it is unusual for a building to be 12 stories in a horizontal direction instead of vertically!
I only pasted a few of the photos here; there are lots of other unusual buildings at the link, as you have seen. Part 2 (and another page) of that link is here incase you or anyone else that may be interested missed it at the page (there are fifty more buildings at the second link). I think they are interesting to see; would be great to walk inside and see what they look like from the interior as well.

Verencat, that is a wonderful video clip! Great how they show inside and outside of the building. I liked the round windows, the lovely views, the open spacious feeling that casts out to the sea, the decor (including mermaid), the strange long sticks on the balcony's roof......the whole atmosphere created there.
Looks like an excellent place for a soothing holiday (and to fall into the sky so blue).

Thanks for all of those, Javed. I love unusual and non-symmetric architecture.

Someone in our neighborhood re-did their home in light purple. No doubt it offends some, but I love the individuality.

Heck; I even love it when someone puts pink flamingos on their lawn. A home not so far away has them and practically every other "tacky" lawn accessory you can think of and I smile every time I see it.

Perhaps it all stems back to an old 8mm home movie I saw years ago of my grandfather's old home at the rear of his grocery store. On the railings of his porch, he had made a flowing mini-river. After he retired, he collected driftwood and old crab shells. He would paint faces on the crabs and add arms and legs made of pipe-cleaners and use the driftwood for scenery. Many of the crabs were made to represent band members (with mini-guitars) and other professions. Paint-by-the-numbers paintings were among his specialties. He also liked to use liquid rubber to make plaster casts of various objects and paint them. I believe he considered himself an artist, and I guess in a way he was.

Tom, glad you enjoyed the unusual buildings. Purple houses are quite rare; there is a nice one that I pass sometimes when driving. It definitely stands out and I find it rather appealing, artistic and full of character. It is a quirky old cottage style home with tin roofing and the front garden has a crowded and colorful abundance of plants and flowers. It has a magical certain something about it!

You are lucky to have such special memories of your grandfather. That mini-river in the railings of the porch that he created seems a fascinating idea. Thoughts and imagination turned into a physical form can be much more than just the resulting physical form; the results can convey something else that is precious, unique and cannot be seen with the eye.

Garden accessories can certainly make me smile

In France we have something called "the garden gnome liberation front" or something like that. They abduct (well, liberate as they see it) garden gnomes.

But seriously; just yesterday I was reading in Quirkology by Richard Wiseman about how many famous people have lied about the date of their birth in order to pad their resumes by making it appear that they were born on a more historically significant date.
Jesus was born on the 6th of January. He sure missed his parties...

Any one remember when this first became a national holiday? Probably in the 70's, because I do remember (vaguely). They were merging George Washington's bday (2/11) and Abraham Lincoln's (2/22) and having only one holiday. That's why they call it President's Day.

And I remember this mostly because my baby brother (now 43) was born on Feb 22 too.

The two were celebrated separately until Congress voted to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday. Then the two were combined into President's Day in order to make room on the calender for Dr. King.
