I've read it a few times. I don't know it's great SciFi, but I like it a lot. You feel good after reading it.

Not to be confused with a book by the same name by Aleister Crowley.

Poul Anderson's novels of the Time Patrol are classics of the genre and essential reading for those interested in time travel stories.

His _Boat of a Million Years_ is an interesting take on immortality w/ a back-story reaching way back in time so as to be an historical series of inter-twined novels for much of the story.

+1 for Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle
+1 for Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth - I've got World Without End close to the top of my To Be Read pile as well.

Try Orson Scott Card's "PastWatch." It is a good story, and they travel back to pre-Columbian America just a few years before Columbus discovers it, in order to fast-track the natives to a tech level which will level the playing field when the Europeans arrive.

Mediax: And hurry and get to "World Without End." You will like it!

You might look into John Birmingham's Weapons of Choice. It is the first book in a trilogy about near future US Navy traveling back to WWII. The othe books are Designated Targets and Final Impact. I remember a ovie like this in the 80's Called The Final Countdown I think with Martain Sheen, There was also a movie, The Philadelphia Experiment but I don't know if there are any novels tied to them.

Along similar lines (but reversed), and of course an orphaned book;

The Seventh Carrier by Peter Albano

You should give "To Say Nothing of the Dog" by Connie Willis a try. It involves time travel back to the Victorian era. It's a fun comedy of manners with some very charming characters. It's especially recommended for fans of Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat."

That really didn't do it for me. The first book was great. The next 4 was meh. I don't get why it is loved so much?

World Without End was unfortunately not as good as Pillars.

Probably should have never made a movie from a short story.

For me Pillars just kinda drags along, some of the authorial hand is quite visible in manipulating the story and reader and the characters and the intrigue (political and church) just is not interesting to me.

It's not bad mind you, but it just doesn't pull me in and along the way something like "Homer and Langley" or "The Road" did/does.

As the Judge on The Good Wife kept pointing out...
