What a hoot! Lots of passion with this group, I like it.
Ea, thank you for your response, I enjoy a lively discussion and appreciate the information provided by all.

It may be a misimpression on my part, but I feel that some of the commentators don't share my problems because they've been able to avail themselves of DRM workarounds that are no longer available? That topic now seems to be verboten.

I am the keeper of the Visual Kindle Guide wiki. Amazon has forbidden us to discuss how to get library books onto a Kindle in the public forum and on the wiki (lawyers involved). The information was removed but I left enough info so that passersby would know that it is possible and would hopefully come to the forums and ask about it. I and others would then go behind the scenes and share the information to get you up and running.

GalinAZ-

Like you, I never had easy access to DRM Workarounds 101 and I had to spend hours and hours reading forum threads, searching the internet, followed by even more reading. I do not expect others to do the work for me.

As a result, I gradually gathered enough information to know what tools were required to accomplish the task. Then, when I had a question or two, everyone, and I mean everyone, here at MR was/is more than generous with their time and knowlege to help me.

Take a deep breath, find some time to really peruse the threads here, and I guarantee you will be armed with enough info that will point you in the direction you are seeking. Then, if/when you are stuck, just politely post your question and the many knowledgable people here will be happy to help.

GalinAZ-You will find a thread under each of the Epub, Pdf and Mobi categories above. I was an absolute dunce when it came to computers, but I got enough help here at MR to be able to read library books on my kindle. Unfortunately, I got so good at removing DRM, that I am now kind of sad when I get a book that doesn't have DRM!

I think the scripts for Epub are still on I heart cabbages blog. That would be a good place to start, because that seems to be the most common format. Once you have that working, Pdf just needs an extra script.

Hello Harry:

I'm interested in what you think are better devices than the Kindle? I'm planning on buying an eReader for a family member as a gift and would appreciate the info.

I am a Kindle owner and enjoy it.

However, I think personally there are a number of much, much better devices on the market than the Kindle

I think I've done the appropriate research and now have enough info to either be dangerous or be successful at removing DRM from library books so I can read them on my Kindle. I just need to set aside a coupla hours to try it. I wish it wan't so (apparently) onerous but maybe I'll end up like you and be able to do it routinely.

Thanks, Plato.

To the OP, I don't see why you oughtn't sell the Kindle and buy something else. I agree with you somewhat on a lot of your issues which is why I got a Sony in the first place. Of course, to each his/her own. The person who gave you the Kindle would probably like you to have something you will actually use and enjoy, so why not get a different reader?

Just curious. I agree with your advice btw.

I like my kindle but find I use my 900 mostly these days.
When I'm "out and about," it's the 5" Pocketbook 360. When I'm reading at home, and especially when I'm proof-reading my books, it's the 6" BeBook Neo.

Kindle isn't a toy. Now technically there is minesweeper but beyond that so far no games.

Can you do more on a laptop? Certainly but that's on a LCD screen. I do have a laptop but I can't wireless download things for free.

It's much easier to read my kindle than my laptop. If I want to read large articles I'd prefer the kindle...otherwise I'd just print them out. If you want to read on a laptop that's fine...but...I have used computers for the past 15 or so years...if you want to include video games let's go back about 25 or so years (maybe 27...hard to say) it's simply easier to read text on a kindle.

When it comes down to it when people read they have the text and there's light on top of it so you can read. tv/computer screens emit light so it's the opposite of what we are used to. We'd have to put lights on the floor instead of ceilings to get the same affect.
