Sounds like the autobiography I haven't written yet.

A plot point in the story was that the narrator recorded him with some sort of device, which he slowed down to reveal that the boy actually just spoke inhumanly fast.

Does anyone know what story this was? Bonus brownie points if you can tell me the collection-- I'd love to read this one again!
Sorry, nothing ringing other than my flippancy bell. Sounds interesting though.

I'm looking for a book or perhaps it was a short story that was set on a south Pacific island at the start of WW II. The main character that i remember was a Catholic missionary who had a small but wonderful garden there, which he had built up over many years of bringing soil from other islands in baskets. Anyway, the plot was about the Japanese soldiers arriving at the island, but I can't remember what happens and I'd like to reread it. Does this ring any bells out there?

Anyone know what it was?
I am pretty sure there was a Robert A Heinlen book that has a story like this

How about this one? It was a story about children who encountered a fantasy world of dwarves etc and caves (I think in Alderley Edge), read it at school 25 years ago. Sorry there isnt much to go on!

Probably 'The Amber Spyglass' by Philip Pullman.

Mentioned in the "Wheeled" section of the Wikipedia article on "Rotating locomotion in living systems".

"The 2000 novel The Amber Spyglass, by English author Philip Pullman, features an alien race known as the Mulefa, who use large, disc-shaped seed pods as wheels. They grip the pods with two limbs, while propelling themselves with two other limbs. The Mulefa have a symbiotic relationship with the seed pod trees, which depend on the rolling action to crack open the pods and allow the seeds to emerge."

I'm chiming in here with a forgotten book as well...

The story took place at the beginning of the Civil war - I think there was a woman who was supposed to marry one brother but was in love with another. The family was split between Northern and Southern sympathies. I think the elder brother had an illegitimate daughter with a colored woman (possibly a family slave?). It was actually more of a mystery than a romance.

I seem to remember that the story was in a hardcover book, with a collection of 4 or 5 novellas/condensed novels. I'm thinking it was something like Reader's Digest Condensed books, but I looked through the list and didn't see anything that seemed familiar. I think it was written by 2 authors.

re: The HAB Theory

Well, I read it myself and it absolutely stayed with me (I think I still have the PB copy floating around somewhere...). That was the type of book I read a lot of as a young adult - one of the more readable and gripping books of the genre, IMO.

Nope, I've read that. It was definitely a short story/novella length, and I'm almost positive that it was written by two authors.

Famous poetry anthology. Well, famous enough to be in a pocket sized edition at Waldenbooks ten years ago, anyway...

Had all my favorite poems in it: Patterns, Flanders Fields, Annabelle Lee...

I've Googled 'Poetry anthologies' til my fingers are sore and can't find it. All I remember is it was somebody's treasury of poems (and I don't remember if that was the actual title, either - but I Googled that too with no luck).

Any help appreciated...
