I guess with the "minor power management improvements" there won't be a sleep mode for it or something that keeps the bootup time from being 40+ seconds. I was actually waiting for this but since I use it mainly for my pdfs they've disabled all the key features I use it for so I'll be waiting another 8 months or so for the next update I guess. God I hope one of the 50 tablets that come out this year are good so I can release myself from the grips of Irex.

That's a good question. I'm hoping that at some point the DR1000 will get the same power management that is in the DR800. I don't know if that's what "minor power management improvements" means though.

I wonder what's means "Completely new DR800-style GUI, including new Menu"
I don't like very much the DR800 GUI....

Before install this update on my baby, I'll create a new emu.
Then I'll decide.

I like to change from mobi to epub, but that's means I have lot of work to do (delete all mobi, create all epub...) gosh....

Since I use the DR1000 to practice reading Spanish I require the mobipocket dictionaries I purchased. I understand this isn't irex's fault for whatever legal reason. But what about bug fixes or enhancement? Since the answer seems to be a big fat no then they lost a customer. My Hanvon 516 goes every where I go fitting nicely in my coat pocket. My Bebook NEO is awesome as well.
The only nice thing I can say about irex is that without Openinkpot and Calibre all my readers would be a disappointment. Maybe irex should donate some DR800's to the Openinkpot developers. who knows what wonderful things they could do with it. Hmm..DR800 with Openinkpot? SOLD!

I use my DR1000S to read DRM-free PDFs and DjVu files so this update doesn't really add any features and removes a few useful features. I think I will give it a miss. Native ePub support would be nice but I much prefer reading reflowable text on my Kindle.

I wonder if 'tabs', for quickly switching between multiple documents, will survive the upgrade.

That is exactly what I was wondering. If tabs disappear then this would be a disaster for business users.

Does anyone know?

Perhaps I'm confused by their blog, I won't be able to connect it to my PC anymore?
And I won't be able to write on my PDF's anymore?
And once I use the Notepad, I can't merge it to typed text on my PC?

And I don't have any epub anything.

When playing with the DR800 on the emulator I also saw that you can only have 1 document opened and thus not switch easily between applications and documents. I was also wondering what will happen to the taskbar for the DR1000, the taskbar is part of the popupmenu, which seems to be completely changed in the new firmware according to the anouncement.
I hope they keep it, otherwise I probably stick to the old firmware, I only read technical magazines and books in PDF, with the auto-zoom.

You can still connect to the PC but the Windows Companion Software is not upgraded to understand the new firmware, so currently there is no software to merge or convert scribbles and notes on the PC.

You are still able to write on PDF's.

You can still use the tabbar.

Gertjan,
Can you save the pdf you have scribbled on (even on the DR itself) so that others can read your comments though?
My impression is that this won't be possible, or at least not yet.

Howard,

like before, the scribbles are saved in the metadata.db file in the same folder as where the original.pdf is located. The sql tables inside the metadata.db files contain different items / have other formatting, so the companion software cannot recognize them. If you sent someone your edited pdf file, also sent the corresponding metadata.db file with it. If the receiver puts these two files in the same folder on his/hers DR1000 your scribbles will be visible.

I think he is talking about non DR-owners, so then the only way is to merge scribbles and document.
