I'm sure of it too.

And actually, weight was indeed a more important aspect than screen size.

Nope. I've not yet seen or heard of any 6" reader being too heavy. To me, going from 6" to 5" when you maybe have old/tired eyes is a downgrade.

My mom is in her 80s and she has a 600 and it's not too heavy for her at all.

Well, my mom is considerably younger, and has had an operation on her wrists that makes the weight of the reader rather important. Hopefully the smaller screen won't be a problem, but we'll wait and see.
And the 600 is almost too heavy for me! Your mom must be pretty strong!

My mom is in pretty good health. She used to play tennis a lot and now only plays golf.

The 302 is only 9.8 ounces without a cover. So it's quite light. The 301+ is 6.1 ounces without a cover. Even lighter.

So please, don't wait until after she doesn't like the 5" screen. Just get her a 6" screen right off the bat.

She's got a usb to mains converter. I don't know if it is the ideal solution (I know it doesn't work with the sony), but it has worked fine for almost two years.

She'll check the battery and let me know.

[EDIT] The battery was almost full. So not a battery problem, unless there's a connection loose or something. She again connected it to the pc, with the first press of the on button the screen flickered but nothing. With the second press of the on button the screen went black. And so it stayed.

That's fine, and how I always charge mine. I only connect it to my PC to transfer books.

It froze frequently ever since she's had it, but a reset usually solved the problem.

Which brings me to the question: What to do with a dead Cybook Gen 3?

If it can be resuscitated, by all means, please, tell me how! (I've kind of given up hope as you can probably imagine)

And if not, can I do anything else useful with it? Load a different firmware? (How, if it won't even turn on?) Make it a nice picture frame? Take it apart and study the mysteries of e-ink?

for any serious or silly suggestions!

What is your serial number?
Do you know if you have a 200Mhz one or a 400Mhz?
Did you installed the latests firmware (1.5 for mobi or 2.0 for ePub)?

There are plenty of reason for a device that looks like dead, and the first that come to mind, is a broken screen.

How do you find the serial number and the Mhz? I'll tell my mother to check.

two things for the serial number:

If you have two stickers on the back, you have a 200Mhz unit.
If you have one sticker, the device is a 200Mhz unit is the serial number start with EB001 (or EB100 I can't remember), and if it start with EB600 it's a 400MHz model.

There is one metal and one paper sticker on the back.
On the paper sticker there are the numbers EB001A(P34) and EB001AP3484B03635, so I guess it's 200Mhz.

Oh and another slight update, the black screen went back to white the moment she unplugged it from the pc.

I experienced something similar a while ago.
I disconnected it from my laptop and it went just sort of gaga, also the flickers of the LED with no reaction of the screen, the laptop would not recognize it, when connected, etc.
I tried many things, many times, including taking out the battery, nothing helped.

I was so frustrated, I just put it away and did not even look at it for a week or so.
After that, I was tried again and - bing! - here it was! booting properly and then charging for a long time.

I still wonder, what that was.
