All the V3 are the same hardware with the minor change in the lBook with a slightly larger button for next page and the color differences. Firmware for one will work on the other. Note that the V3 is not the same as the V5.

Yes, any V3 device can use the firmware for any resellers V3 device, and the same goes for the V5.

Again yes, but that is a very big IF. The internal hardware between the V3 and V5 is quite different, so it is much more than just a recompilation. For example the V5 screen controller is different than the V3, and the V5 has a jog dial that the V3 does not have. There are other differences as well, but those are two standout examples.

If you have your original firmware as a file on your computer then you can reload it onto your device. The firmware cannot overwrite the bootloader in your device, so there is very low risk in trying out different firmware compilations. If you do not like one, or it does not work for some reason, you can always reload any other firmware that you have for your device.

They all have their pluses and minuses. None of them are actually inadequate, but some may have strengths in different areas than others.

FB2 is my favorite format, since it is elegantly simple and is easily tweaked with any normal text editor, because the entire file including images is text. All images are at the end of the file in their own section, and they can be compressed formats like JPG. The images are coded in BASE64 so that they are also text.
IMHO, the LBook firmware or Tirwal firmware have the best FB2 support since they use CoolReader 3 for most formats. All the reseller firmware packages are still using CoolReader 2 as far as I know.

[LIST=1][*]Can any Hanlin device use the firmware of any comparable Hanlin device, no matter the brand.

Yes, as long as you stay on the same model type - V3 or V5 they can't be mixed.

Not yet

Firmware can be exchanged any time with no problem (see above)
[*]Is the resident V3 software from whatever brand of V3 you're using inadequate?

Depends on what your reading needs and/or preferences are. IMHO, none of the factory firmwares are adequate.

Just to be complete: the current daily builds of OpenInkpot also include CoolReader 3.

Yes, the experimental OI builds do include CoolReader 3, but the last time I tried a current OI build a few weeks ago it was also VERY slow. Do you know if that problem has been addressed in the Hanlin OI builds yet? The 0.2 release of OI does not have any CoolReader at all.
OI would be my first choice if it ever regains the speed it had a year ago, and also included CoolReader 3. It is the only firmware for Hanlin that is not plagued with ADE as the default EPUB reader. The Russian firmware that Keng2000 linked to does have an *option* to use CoolReader for EPUB.

I had the latest Tirwal firmware lying about, and just flashed it. I must admit that it is quite a bit faster than OI...So no, I guess it's not addressed.

Thank you very much for checking!!
I should not have been so lazy, and should have just checked the latest OI snapshot myself.

suggestion to LARdT or Tirwal

How about building a wiki page for your product. The wiki does support Spanish as well so you should build two pages. I would be glad to help if you run into problems.

dwonk, the installation instructions are the same as with any other firmware, for instance the Bebook firmware. See below.

Quote:
5. Copy the unpacked file 'V3update.bin' onto the root of an SD card. (SD cardsize should be larger than 128MB, but no greater than 1GB.)
6. Turn off the BeBook
7. Insert the SD card into the BeBook eReader.
8. Press and hold the V+ (volume up button) and turn on the BeBook eReader.
9. When the update interface appears, press the "OK" Button to start and wait until it's finished.
10. Restart the BeBook.

Done!

I must be blind, but I can't find the 2.9 version of Tirwal's firmware for the V3 on his website. Could I get a link please?

**Never mind, I found it'! Thanks!**

I downloaded the Tirwal 2.9 version, installed it, the reader shows the logo and all, but I can't put any ebooks on it when I connect it with the computer. It just says that it is invalid to make or change anything.
What is wrong?

Here is the 2.9 version.
