TAZ recipe
I refined a bit my recipe from TAZ DigiAbo on www.taz.de and would like to ask if it could be integrated into Calibre.
The TAZ is the only german newspaper (as far as i know) which offers a drm-free, paid download of their daily issues in the epub format. I think it would help some people which have this abo and would like to push it to their reader. cheers, jaclar |

Thanks, Starson17, I appreciate the step-by-step process. Don't know how I missed it earlier.
If someone would make a recipe for GoComics (thanks, ziegl027), I'd love to have that. Calvin and Hobbes was always a favorite of mine and I'd love to have them on my Kindle 2. |

I'm using Calibre 6.40, I think. Pretty recent but not the absolute most recent (it takes my machine FOREVER to update it, so I don't do it for every minor revision that comes along). |

I've heard this from others, and certainly believe you, but I find it odd. Mine seems to update in a flash (Vista). I usually update the codebase first with Bazaar, then update the executables, but I would expect those to be separate and not affect each other.

Newbie questions
I've managed to create a rudimentary recipe for Naples Daily News, and I also found a website to download the front page in a nice pdf format.
Naples Dailly News Frontpage USA Front Pages Is there a way to automate the download of a single pdf page using calibre? Even better is there a way to include it in the recipe for the papers content so they are uploaded together to the reader? Thanks gat irex800dg Code:
class AdvancedUserRecipe1267557862(BasicNewsRecipe): title = u'Naples News' oldest_article = 7 max_articles_per_feed = 100 no_stylesheets = True remove_tags_before = dict(name='h1') remove_tags_after = dict(id='footer') feeds = [(u'Headlines', u'http://www.naplesnews.com/feeds/headlines/news/'), (u'Entertainment', u'http://www.naplesnews.com/feeds/headlines/entertainment/'), (u'Opinion', u'http://www.naplesnews.com/feeds/headlines/opinion/'), (u'Business', u'http://www.naplesnews.com/rss/headlines/business/'), (u'Lifestyles', u'http://www.naplesnews.com/rss/headlines/lifestyles/'), (u'Sports', u'http://www.naplesnews.com/rss/headlines/sports/') ] def print_version(self, url): return url.replace('partner=RSS', 'print=1') Last edited by gat; 03-09-2010 at 09:14 AM. |

If you pass the pdf as cover_url its first page will be set as the cover of the download. Other than that, no.

The computer on which I have Calibre is an oldish (for a computer) Fujitsu convertible mini-laptop, running Tablet XP. I can't recall off the top of my head what it's specs are, but it isn't exactly going to tear your socks off with its speed. |

And what needs to be done to get a favicon next to news source name in calibre's recipes list?

Calibre can run from source code or from compiled executables. Most people run from the compiled executables. I like to tinker with the source code (which is human readable), so I download the updated code (codebase) first, then the executables. If I tell Calibre where the source code is, it uses that (and my changes to it.) If I don't tell it where to find the code, it runs the compiled version (which I can't change).

Orlando Sentinel Recipe
I'd like a good recipe for The Orlando Sentinel:
http://www.orlandosentinel.com I have tried creating a feed using the RSS pages but am getting a large number of pages that only show the headline and then reader responses as opposed to the full article. Thanks for any assistance, Dan - aka Gatorguy |

I'm wondering about my comments above - where I've said that two different readers on the same Windows Mobile platform (an HTC HD2) show the comics in two different ways when the EPUB format is being read. One cuts off the right, one doesn't. Because these are WinMo devices, not true readers, there isn't any output plugin, as in the case of the Sony, so there's no "extra" processing being done to the EPUB. They get the EPUB exactly as the Save to Disk function saves it. One of the readers is very easy to use, and my wife would like to be able to read the comics with that reader, but it's the one that cuts off the right. Can you, or anyone else, guide me towards how I might customize the recipe to help avoid cutting off the comics on the right. Was a CSS change made to help with this problem on the SONY? I know extra CSS can be added to a recipe. Thanks! |

The way conversion works is that at convert time the target screen size is loaded from the users current output profile. That is the screen size that is used. The only reason this is necessary at all is that Adobe Digital Editions stupidly does not rescale images that don't fit on the screen.
So if you want to generate an epub file that has large images and works across a number of devices you have to choose an output profile whose screen size is <= the screen size of the smallest of those devices. Presumably one of your comic readers suffers from the same limitation as ADE - not rescaling images. |

Article Listing and Extra CSS
After putting news feeds on my Nook, it seems like it justifies the text of the link to the article in the article list, however it doesn't seem to justify the underline properly. On headlines without a lot of space, the underline seems OK. On headlines with a lot of space after justifying, the underline falls short...almost like it's not being justified.
My question is how can I modify the default template so that the headlines in the list are aligned left...that way I'm hoping that the underlineline will look correct. Seemed like the help said the template shouldn't be messed with...but to use :member:"Extra_CSS" instead. I just don't know how to use that. Thanks... Gabe |
