urg. i had to have blood drawn today. i HATE having blood drawn, particularly when i have to go in the morning with nothing in my stomach, since i am hypoglycemic and tend to faint if i don't eat soon enough. i hate it to the point that i put it off until i absolutely have no choice, like today, and by then usually i've got a whole collection of old prescriptions that i do all at once. today i had 3, one of which was from 2 years ago (i'll ask my doctor to make another one with today's date so i can get reimbursed by the social security ; prescriptions are only valid one year).

among other things, they needed to find out which blood group i belong to. so i'm sitting in the chair, staring at the ceiling, trying to ignore the girl changing tube after tube after tube, and FINALLY she says "you can relax your fist now" and i think, "thank god ! it's over !"

...until she says "the other technician will be with you right away to take the other sample." what now ???? other sample ???? they're going to stick me AGAIN ????? well guess what. it turns out that to test blood group, they take two different samples by two different perople, and test them with two different serums from two different labs in two different machines by two different technicians (in a box, on a fox...).

okay, yes, i'm glad they're being so cautious to make sure there's no mistake, since it could be serious. but now i've got little cotton ball compresses taped to *both* my arms, and the second technician told me my vein wasn't flowing well (the first one had no trouble, grmblmblm...) and so he kept pressing on it, and now it feels like i have a bruise.

have i mentioned i hate having blood drawn ?

Poor Zelda - at least it's over, and I hope you're feeling better now.

Two samples seems a bit drastic - was there some problem that made them change their procedure?

They only ever take one from me. Luckily, I'm not too bothered about getting stuck with a needle - but I draw the line at having a cotton wool ball taped to the wound. When you've got hairy arms, it's agony taking the tape off afterwards; I much prefer to bleed on my clothes thank you very much.

You need some hot chocolate and chouquettes to recover. I'm not a doctor, so you can trust this advice

It doesn't bother me at all either. It bothers the yeti though - to the point he can't watch me have a blood test or an injection!

I humour them and let them tape the cotton wool on, then remove it as soon as I'm out of line of sight. My arms aren't that hairy, but if I leave the tape on for more than a few minutes I come up in a lovely tape-shaped rash.

Oh- I meant to add a rant of my own. My boss is expecting me to work - he doesn't understand I have a story in my head I need to get out! To make matters work, one of my colleagues is on leave today which has put paid to the usual routine of co-ordinated skiving.

depends. if i malinger and feign wooziness, will you give me chocolate ? thank you for the flowers. it's the little attentions like that that make all the difference, when you're convalescing.

i don't know if there was an incident, and i don't even know whether this is a change compared to an old policy. they just explained that that way they have a control so there can't be any mistake, as that could be fatal in case of a transfusion.

if i hadn't needed the blood group test it would have been only one for me too. *sigh*

i don't have hairy arms but i don't much like pulling the tape off either. and i'm not going to leave it on there much longer, those cotton balls are bothering me every time i bend my arm.

Urgghhh! I hate that too, and anything medical being done to me. It's not just the needle, but the smell of it all, the whole horrible experience. That antiseptic, bleached out smell of doctor's rooms. The crinkle of disposable paper as you sit on it, the blank, off-white walls, the heavy wood doors. The waiting rooms with disposable plastic chairs and pamphlets on diseases. *shivers*

Hope everything goes well with your blood tests, and here's a gigantic toblerone to take away the sicky feeling:

Aw, Zelda, I feel for you. I hate having blood drawn! When they do blood glucose tests, I have to have blood drawn every half hour for 5 hours so they can do a chart. (Which makes it worse, as I'm not allowed to eat.)

Here's some more and I'll send a big bar of chocolatethat it is over. Sorry about the chocolate.. I started thinking about having blood drawn and I had to eat the chocolate..

I hope the rest of the day is much better.

It's also a manufacturing process wherein a layer of material is taken off a length of hose so a coupler can be fitted.

I like Am's version better
