For those who don't understand the concept, it works the same way as the motor in your car (unless you own an original VW Beetle): A water pump circulates water through a metal block which sits on top of the CPU. That water carries heat away to a radiator and back, continuing the cycle. The clamps I use are just smaller versions of the ones you see on a car's radiator hose, and the coolant is distilled water with something called Water-Wetter that's used in cars to make their cooling systems more chemically efficient; I won't use the "custom" jazz they sell for ridiculous prices at enthusiast sites.

It sounds shocking (no pun intended) to some but in enthusiast circles this is fairly commonplace. The really serious gamers use $800 phase-change units which use refrigerant to cool their rigs down below zero, and those who overclock just for the sport of it use liquid nitrogen. Me? I use my machine as basically a workstation on steroids; encoding video, multiple virtual servers, etc. That and I like the idea of getting US$1500 worth of performance from US$300 worth of Intel's silicon.

Rejoicing! I finally, finally, found a bluetooth headset that I can stand to wear! The one I originally had both hurt my ear and the clip wouldn't stay around my ear, both because I have such small ears. This one is tiny (and probably eminently lose-able), but it's small enough that it doesn't hurt the inside of my ear, and the clip for the outside is long enough and thin enough that it wraps all the way around and doesn't poke me. I can even shake my head and this one's not going anywhere. I did that with my first one and it went flying across the room.

it finally happened!! I was on the plane this morning, and I *finally* saw someone else with an ereader!! It was a kindle, and she was sitting across the aisle from me. Having never really seen a kindle irl, I kept sneaking peaks at her hardware It was a lot bigger than mine, but I didnʻt feel intimidated in the least! Mine was shinier.

Iʻm just so happy Iʻm not the only one. She was probably from the mainland, though.

(btw, congrats, shel! I actually went to a wired headphones thing because I canʻt find the recharging plug for my super old bluetooth, and no longer allowed to talk on the phone in the car without hands-free)

Somehow, in my Sunday morning stupor, I missed out the 'heater-core' there - and I thought "Wow, that's some overcooled! - Must take up a lot of space..."

Funny thing is, the "professional" radiators they sell for this are just remanufactured Bonneville heater cores tapped for hose fittings; they sell for around US$45 for that and some black paint. I pay USD$20 at the auto parts store about a mile away, then get vinyl tubing & hose clamps from the hardware store down the street. Haven't had a leak from a finished system in the 4 years since I built the first one.

That whole Bonneville thing started by accident; seems a rather enterprising individual several years ago discovered that a '77 Bonneville heater core just happens to fit perfectly into one 5 1/4" drive bay and has just the right surface-area for a pair of 120mm fans. If you're short on space, a heater core from an '86 Chevette is exactly half the length and will correspondingly use a single 120mm fan.

What you have conceived and built is nothing short of phenomenal. It would never occur to me to boost an Intel chip's performance with parts from an old Bonneville. Kudos & Karma!

Thanks tons but I didn't conceive of it; I was just short on money when I first started this (on a Prescott-core Pentium 4), and since there's nothing wrong with the hearter-core itself I just kept using it when I bought this new case. I didn't feel like paying more for parts to mount it inside so I just made a cardboard shroud and wrapped it with electrical tape. Mine is considered a ghetto approach but I prefer "go" over "show"; you should see some of the professionally done rigs:

My last one was all inside the case which was a goal of mine:




Not bad for US$45 for an old beige server case, some black spray-paint, and a piece of plexiglass (I used the leftover scraps to make the fan shroud.)

My best custom job took the least effort: My stepdaughter's BatBox:




Black electrical tape, a Dremel, and a piece of plastic cut from an empty cat-litter jug. Wasn't finished when I took these, still had to straighten the fan and put the laptop DVD drive in.
