The Atheist Manifesto has been mentioned to me several time. I'm going to go find it right now.

Thanks Neil!

P.S. just ordered "The Atheist Manifesto" used in paper...no ebook available that I could find.
I read Hitchens' God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything as an audiobook download from iTunes and it's really really good. The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason by Sam Harris is good also, but as Neil indicated, it seems that at times Harris skates uncomfortable close to La-La land with his talk of spirituality. Still, it is worthwhile reading.

When was the last time that someone was criticized for not “respecting” another person’s unfounded beliefs about physics or history? The same rules should apply to ethical, spiritual, and religious beliefs as well. Credit goes to Christopher Hitchens for distilling, in a single phrase, a principle of discourse that could well arrest our slide toward the abyss: “what can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.”
—Sam Harris, The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason.

Still reading, and enjoying, _The Stand_... a little less than 1/2 way through it.

Could this be Michel Onfray? Some of his books are available in French as e-books, but not at a price I am ready to pay. I did borrow the first volume of his "Contre-histoire de la philosophie" (Not sure how to translate that) at the library, and although I am very ready to agree with him I still feel a bit uneasy about the author himself. He has apparently founded his own school of philosophy, and in some ways acts a little like a sect's guru. Not a very dangerous one, but still...

His case is that the history of philosophy as we know it, has been mostly focused on the idealistic schools and unjustly forgets the materialists. And although I feel he is a bit too enthusiastic to be completely trusted, I am very sympathetic to his ideas and I'd like to know more about those forgotten philosophers he writes about. And I do heartily agree with him on his hate of Plato I think I will read the next volume in time.

Just finished "The Trouble with Physics..." by Lee Smolin.

It was great but I wouldn't say Earth shattering. It does contain a virtual history of string theory + from Einstein to current work. It concludes with mostly a rant against the present academic system of Tenure and Grants and how it needs to change to allow for more innovation/radical thought.

***The Atheist Manifesto has been mentioned to me several time. I'm going to go find it right now***

There are two books called *Atheist Manifesto*, I think, Kenny. The one I was recommending is by Michael Onfray (and thanks for correcting my typo, Florence). Mine's in hardback. Not sure if it's in ebook yet. Best. N

Finished "Aspects of the novel" (E. M Forster) and just realised that I actually now understand much better what a plot is (as opposed to a 'story' or 'tale').

Also finished "Questions for the movie answer man" by Roger Ebert. Just great

I thought The God Delusion was excellent. Well worth the read.

And, to give the other side a shot, I read Life After Death in which the author attacks Dawkins and attempts to prove there is life after death. It was a feeble and very unscientific attempt. Game, set and match to Dawkins

And that is always the issue. It's not an even playing field when you match up science vs religion. They are completely different realms, yet the religious (zealots) always want to "prove" their beliefs.....

That always make me wonder. Why try to explain something through a means which is inherently imcompatible? Why not let it show its meaning in itself. Religion appears to be something that might be meaningful, even if it's not logical or sensible in a scientific sense. Why even bother with science?

I just bought "The Lightning Thief" for my iPhone with the Kindle app. It's not available on Sony, and was only $4 on Kindle, so I went ahead and bought it on there. I hope to enjoy it.

I'm about halfway through that. We seem to have similar literary tastes, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I have so far!

I have just finished reading "All American Kidd" ebook from Smashwords by Rod Poulin I liked it so much I was inspired to give a glowing review only to find that it had been withdrawn reason not given however if you can get it elsewhere it's well worth a read racy in parts but very funny and some recognisable family situations and emotions
