Started reading the 'Denial of Service' series by Steve Jordan. Absolutely love them. Can't necessarily follow the technical details, which might be a good thing as they make sense to me. Great read and phantastically told. It reads as if MD Schitz is telling me the stories (well most of them anyway) in person.

I really got sucked into 'NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children' by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman - highly recommended to people who like to rethink their believes and strategies with children.

Just finished a book most of you probably read when you were in grade school: Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll.

Now that I've got both that book and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland under my belt, I'm ready to see the new Tim Burton movie with Johnny Depp as Alice's romantic interest, the Mad Hatter.

Do you suppose Burton takes liberties with the original?

I've got both of those on my to-read list right after I finish "The Trouble With Physics..." will need the Lewis Carroll antidote at that point.

According to a BBC TV review, Alice is older in the Burton film and it comes with a feminist subtext.

And it was indeed a fast, fun read. Very good.

And what now? I think a Grantville Gazette — lots of short stories set in an alternate timeline where a small US town has ended up back in 1630s Germany, in the middle of the Thirty Years' war. Essentially fan-fic, but authorised and 'canon'.

So - Grantville Gazette Volume 27, here I come.

Oh, I'm sure there are quite a few liberties taken! I made that comment with tongue-in-cheek after reading somewhere that the Mad Hatter will be Alice's love interest. I seriously doubt it will bear much resemblance to the original, but still I expect an extremely fun ride. Johnny Depp is quite a character, and Tim Burton has such a unique and fertile imagination.

Are you planning to see it, Sparrow?

Room 13 by Edgar Wallace. It's the first novel I've read by him and I'm afraid it's a bit of a slog. The J.G. Reeder character is wonderful but everyone else is bland beyond belief. I don't care for any of the middle-class forgers and miscreants that Wallace writes about. His prose is so leaden and dull too.

I'll stick it out though.

Saw the 3D trailer at the cinema and wasn't that enamoured with the effect; I plan on seeing it 2D when the DVD is out.
I've enjoyed all of the Tim Burton films I've seen (except Planet of the Apes).

I'm acquainted with Hank through Facebook and various blogs, and I won a copy of Prime Time, so that necessitated some correspondence. We're not like best friends or anything. But the second time I ever talked to her, she asked me if I was going to be at the latest mystery convention, and if so, she'd be glad to show me around. A few weeks ago, (before the Macmillan/Amazon thing), she announced she was going to be at an event with a few other authors, Donna Andrews included. Well, I am a huge, huge, huge fan of the mysteries that Donna Andrews writes. So...going out on a limb, I messaged Hank via Facebook and asked her if she got a chance could she ask Donna what was up with the unavailability of her titles in ebook formats. She said, "sure, no problem". The day after she got back from the event, I had a message from her, saying Donna was thrilled that I asked, and that her publisher (Macmillan) was blaming Amazon for the hold up. The fact that she remembered to ask at all shocked me to the core - Hank is probably one of the ten busiest people on earth, so that really touched me.
That really is great! Next time you talk to her you can say she has a new fan - read a lot this morning and I'm really liking PRIME TIME!
