I hope the part he didn't post was that backlist titles will remain $1.50-$5.99.

I'm actually buying tons of these right now because I anticipate prices going UP no thanks to publishers screwing over the retailers ability to run sales.

Yes, so I've seen the increased price for convincing me about the kindness of the model. I consider myself corrected.

I expect mass market PB will be the same price in ebook. I really don't see that $1 at the absolute bottom of the price range is much cause for concern-- especially since he is clearly saying that a) they're going to make more ebooks available without windowing, and b) they're going to engage in dynamic pricing, as well as discount ebooks on the NY Times Besteller list.

I.e. 90% of what is getting many people's knickers in a twist is based on incorrect information, cynical presumptions, and general bitterness, with a dash of entitlement to cheapness....

Well, yes, I'm very bitter today. 14$ make that to me. But you have reason, I'll wait to see the new prices, and I'll try to see if they're really cheaper or the same than before the big announce. We'll talk after. By the way, the price you're talking about there're a lot of companies which offer it now, no big advantage there.

It seems to me that a hard cover book priced at $28.99 for example is not sold for $28.99 because they DON'T use the agency model for pbooks...

So, it is unfair to say.... hey look how cheap ebooks are of hard cover release... the eBook is $14.99 and the hardcover is $28.99... but the hard cover is usually discounted so it is probably more like $14.99... so he is blowing smoke up you know where with this apples to amazon (er oranges) comparison.

I'm ok with that as long as the paperback in question is priced in that range.

As long as the e-book is the same or less in price than the cheapest print version I'm fine paying that price.

Where are you buying MacMillan ebooks for $1.50-$5.99? Fictionwise only shows about 50 such titles, mostly $5.99. I think Books on Board has even fewer, but it's hard to tell because the website's slow and the search is somewhat broken.

Two things I noted --
Quote:
Generally e-book editions of hardcover new releases will be priced between $14.99 and $12.99; a few books will be priced higher and lower. This is a tremendous discount from the price of the printed hardcover books, which generally range from $28.00 to $24.00.
First of all, this is completely disingenious because retailers (and Amazon in particular) do not sell books at the listed hardcover price. The actual sales price of a typical new release hardcover at Amazon is $15. The implication he was making, that $14.99 is still a substantial discount over hardcover prices, is completely bogus.

More importantly, if I have a choice betweeen a Macmillan published ebook at $14.99 and a Random House ebook at $9.99 take a guess at which one I will buy — and I buy a lot of books.

Quote:
Rather than address the long-term or author royalty consequences of the change (I’ll save that for next time)...
I don't blame him for not wanting to talk about royalty consequences. Authors make no royalties on books that us customers now refuse to buy, and when a customer does buy an ebook through the “agency” model the author makes far less than they would have under the “retail” model. Plus Macmillan already pays its authors less for ebook royalties than the rest of the industry. Why any author capable of switching to another publisher would stay with Macmillan is beyond me.

Most of the $1.59 ones I will admit were not from Macmillan.

Exactly. This.

I've never, ever, ever paid $24 or $28 for a hardback and nev...ok, highly doubt...I ever would. They either get discounted heavily...$15 or $16...or I wait til they are in paperback. Nevertheless, trying to say "Oh! You're getting a great deal because the $14.99 ebook is so much cheaper than the $27.99 hardback!" is completely bogus.
