I hope the part he didn't post was that backlist titles will remain $1.50-$5.99. I'm actually buying tons of these right now because I anticipate prices going UP no thanks to publishers screwing over the retailers ability to run sales. |

Emphasis added, because agency pricing hasn't kicked in yet. The post clearly says, in the 2nd paragraph: "Starting at the end of March, we will move from the “retail model” of selling e-books (publishers sell to retailers, who then sell to readers at a price that the retailer determines) to the “agency model.” " Next time, I recommend you actually read prior to publicly bursting a blood vessel over incorrect information. |

He's saying: "E-book editions of paperback new releases will be generally priced between $9.99 and $6.99," and that "most Macmillan e-books will still be priced below ten dollars." I expect mass market PB will be the same price in ebook. I really don't see that $1 at the absolute bottom of the price range is much cause for concern-- especially since he is clearly saying that a) they're going to make more ebooks available without windowing, and b) they're going to engage in dynamic pricing, as well as discount ebooks on the NY Times Besteller list. I.e. 90% of what is getting many people's knickers in a twist is based on incorrect information, cynical presumptions, and general bitterness, with a dash of entitlement to cheapness.... |

It seems to me that a hard cover book priced at $28.99 for example is not sold for $28.99 because they DON'T use the agency model for pbooks... So, it is unfair to say.... hey look how cheap ebooks are of hard cover release... the eBook is $14.99 and the hardcover is $28.99... but the hard cover is usually discounted so it is probably more like $14.99... so he is blowing smoke up you know where with this apples to amazon (er oranges) comparison. Where are you buying MacMillan ebooks for $1.50-$5.99? Fictionwise only shows about 50 such titles, mostly $5.99. I think Books on Board has even fewer, but it's hard to tell because the website's slow and the search is somewhat broken.

Two things I noted -- Quote:
More importantly, if I have a choice betweeen a Macmillan published ebook at $14.99 and a Random House ebook at $9.99 take a guess at which one I will buy — and I buy a lot of books. Quote:

I've never, ever, ever paid $24 or $28 for a hardback and nev...ok, highly doubt...I ever would. They either get discounted heavily...$15 or $16...or I wait til they are in paperback. Nevertheless, trying to say "Oh! You're getting a great deal because the $14.99 ebook is so much cheaper than the $27.99 hardback!" is completely bogus. | |
