I seriously thought about being an English teacher, until I realized how much self-control it would take to refrain from belting half the parents who come into my classroom to tell me their lazy little doorstop of a child is the next Stephen Hawking and therefore has no need of basic skills. Worse, I would fear my own temper on discovering a student is in a genuinely dangerous situation only to be told by a superior that I "shouldn't get involved."

Yeah, frustrating situations must abound in teaching anywhere, but it sounds as though the US is gunning for the top spot in the Most Frustrating Place to Teach (Or Not) awards.

In the USA if enough people misspell a word the powers to be add that misspelling to the dictionary.

So how do you know if someone is not really a bad speller but a pioneer of a new spelling?

Bad spelling doth never prosper: what’s the reason?
Why, if it prosper, none dare call it bad spelling.

Bad spelling can be lethal. For example, the greedy Seriph of Al-Yabi was cursed by a badly-educated deity and for some days everything he touched turned to Glod, which happened to be the name of a small dwarf from a mountain community hundreds of miles away who found himself magically dragged to the kingdom and relentlessly duplicated. Some two thousand Glods later the spell wore off. These days, the people of Al-Yabi are renowned for being remarkably short and bad-tempered.
