I'm deeply involved with Orson Scott Card's "The Worthing Saga" on audiobook. I don't remember the last time that I completely lost myself in a book, but this one did it. If you haven't read it, then I recommend you all should drop everything and read it. Card is a master storyteller. I was listening to it and cutting a 21 mm tanzanite, which was a very hard stone and took 3 days to cut and polish the bottom half. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the story while working on the top of the stone!

Still reading the Isaac Asimov collection. On about page 750 of 3800. It's pleasant and easy to read, lots of old old stories from the 50's and 60's. Even at 22 pt font, landscape mode, it is making my eyes throb. But so much fun to read all of those old stories!

Just finished reading Mere Anarchy, Woody Allen's first book of humor in a quarter century. I didn't feel it was one of his best, but it had its moments.

For me, the funniest chapter in any of his books was the mini-play "Mr. Big" in Getting Even. I thought the idea of a hard-nosed detective being hired to find God was hilarious.

And it's finally over. A very uneven book. Some parts I read with interest, some made me regret I even started it. The central concept was so clever and ambitious, it was a pity the author couldn't pull it off. I think such a book needed some decades more of experience, it was too ambitious for a relatively new author. Oh well.

I'm now re-re-reading some Jim Thompson.

The movie pretty much follows the book scene for scene. The movie adds a final line to the last scene that wasn't in the book. What that line seems to imply makes it even more disturbing.

Oh - now I really can't wait to see the movie! While the book is still fresh in my head! Thanks for the report - I always wonder how closely a movie will follow a book I've enjoyed reading!

An Awesome Thriller Recommendation

If you like thrillers, I highly recommend Scott Nicholson's The Skull Ring, a spine-tingling story that kept me up turning (e-book) pages late into the night. While I don't usually read books about the occult, this one was truly exceptional, for its great protagonist, gripping story and vivid writing.

The book takes you into the mind of Julia Stone, who suffered an occult-related childhood trauma so horrible she's constantly on the look-out for creeps who threaten her safety. Her search for solutions takes her even deeper into the heart of the very danger she seeks to escape. Nicholson's
writing packs a visceral punch that'll keep you hooked throughout. The question of who Julia should trust is omnipresent, right up to the book's thrilling conclusion.

At a $1.99 on Kindle, it's a steal. The book is a "must read."

Best,
Debbi

Just finished 'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks' by Rebecca Skloot. It was excellent. Am now starting 'Fantasy on Death' by JD Robb and two indie reads I received as review copies.
