An estate (real property - land) is entailed under feudal laws dating back to the thirteenth century. A person in possession of an entailed estate has only a life interest - he cannot sell, mortgage or give it away. It had to be kept intact to be passed on to the next (usually male) heir.

Definitely not one to read without having recently read the previous books in the series. I got caught up around half way through, but it would have been a lot better to have re-read the other books in the series before starting.

Rather a mid-series book. A couple of minor resolutions, lots of things happen, but it definitely feels just like part of a larger work. I don't think there's really enough of a story (beginning, middle, end) happening in the book.

On the other hand, I will certainly buy and read the next one. Although if it also takes a few years to arrive, I'll try to make the time to re-read the earlier ones next time!

Next I have some older SF — The Compleat Bolo by Keith Laumer. This is an omnibus edition comprising Bolo (1976) and Rogue Bolo (1986).

Just finished reading E.M. Forster's novel, Maurice. It's a coming of age story of a young man and his struggles to come to terms with his homosexuality, overcome barriers of class, and find true love. It's by the author of January's Book Club selection, The Machine Stops. I highly recommend both books.

I'm rereading Leroux's The Phantom of Opera, next week my sister and me are going to London and she wanted to see the musical. The story is quite different from the novel so I can finally decide which I like better (not having seen the musical live before).

After that I got A Terrible Beauty by Graham Masterton lined up, followed by either David Hewson's The Villa of Mysteries (part 2 of the Nic Costa series) or I might reread part one of Jan Burke's Irene Kelly mysteries.

I just finished reading an incredible book. It is a beautifully-done memoir of addiction and recovery entitled A SEASON IN HELL. I recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired by someone's journey into the abyss and return from it. The author, G. Noles, has some amazing insights. A short book but not one word is wasted.

I'm reading "Manhunting" by Jennifer Crusie in pbook, and I'm hoping to finish it in the next few hours so I can return it to the library. I also started "His Robot Girlfriend" on my iPhone. There's a few free books on smashwords that I've been wanting to read, but with my rule to only download one ebook to my Sony when I've read two, they keep getting pushed back. But then I realized that I don't count iPhone ebooks

I'm finishing up Simon Wood's "Working Stiffs" a dark mystery/thriller collection. Wood has an amazing touch--even when you think you know what twists are coming, he's always three steps ahead of you (and waiting in the shadows with a blunt instrument...)

I just finished Dragged into Darkness, another one of Simon Wood's short story collections, and I agree with your assessment of his writing. I'm going to have to read one of his novels soon, perhaps We All Fall Down.

I just started "Dispatches from a Public Librarian" by Scott Douglas (free on Smashwords) in celebration of sending a letter of interest to the local library in hopes of landing a spot on the board of trustees. Pretty funny
