Desktop entries are functional in DR800 when placed in/under the "Personal Documents" folder which can be browsed without the 'SD card' function. This folder works like any other on DR1000 so it can be used for installers on both devices.

Given the obvious nature of their naming scheme, this may not indicate any future products. I would be more excited if there were a DR800SGW.

I wouldn't read too much into that. The DR1000 and DR1000SW don't exist either. From the code point of view, it's probably a case of "stick them all in there just in case we end up releasing such a device so that we won't have to go back and fix it later".

I've downloaded the SDK but I did't have time yet to set it up. One thing I would like to check is how hard it would be to port some conventional Linux apps, such as Evince (PDF viewer) as Xournal (note taking) for the DR 800. Does anyone has any idea?

Xournal already has a port to the DR1000. You'd probably want to start with that. Mostly, the difficulty of porting depends on what it uses for the UI, and how tangled that might be with other parts of the app. GTK+ stuff is likely the easiest.

There are a couple things left out of the getting started doc for the SDK though. You need to also install intltool from apt-get, and when building hello-world (which is missing the build_all script the PDF references), you need to run autoreconf, intltool, configure, and make in that order or it won't build.

Well, I did this with my brand new, just out of the box, very exciting, first reader I've ever owned but what the hell I need folders. And I still don't seem to have folders.

Be careful, which editor to use. Notepad and others may destroy the structure of the document. If so, the reader overwrites the file when booting up, thus ignoring the changes. Just open the file again after boot-up to check.

It's also important to REBOOT the device, before the new *.ini file takes any effect.
You must press and hold the "off" switch until the green LED goes out, after that it reboots.

This was happening at first - I was editing the file in notepad and it was just reverting to the original value on boot up. Then edited in Wordpad and, despite sdcard still being the value in the file I don't see the sdcard on my home menu. Any other suggestions??

I'm wondering whether editing the line
/apps/er/sys/global/is_first_boot=false
to
/apps/er/sys/global/is_first_boot=true

would help - but will confess that I don't really know what I'm talking about!

So when going to the emall, it's really opening a browser to irex website http://redirect.irexnet.com/mall/yourserialnumberhere

I went to the above url from my computer and it doesn't show a link to the BN store. Perhaps someone can try their serial number in the URL to see if it makes a difference. The serial number on the battery door and what is reported from Settings may be different.

For me, it only shows:

I was just wondering what limits the dr800sg's view of only NewspaperDirect and the BN bookstore.

What browser are you using? Odds are me using Safari (Webkit) is routing me to the device page, while you are getting the desktop page.

The device page only has B&N and Newspaper Direct.
