I wonder if your unit is defective. When I plug the charger into mine, while switched on, it just shows the lightning symbol to indicate that it's charging. Remove it - no problems. So what you're seeing looks like a problem with your unit, not PRS-900s.

It seems just the opposite to me. The reader charges...it just loses it's memory. The AC adaptor shouldn't have anything to do with that. At any rate, it's boxed up and put away against the day that titles that I want to read come available. Or not.

I seriously think you have a defective PRS-900 unit! I've had my unit for almost a month now and haven't had to re-install any of my books everytime I plug the usb plug into my computer. Just send your unit in for an exchange from sony. You'll be a lot happier with a new unit.

I agree. Someone paid good money for it. Why not return it for a replacement? It's a simple process. If you decide to sell the replacement so be it.

In all likelihood that's what I'll end up doing. Neither Sony nor anyone else seems to offer the books that I want to read anyway, so I'd just as soon sell it and give my girlfriend her money back.

It doesn't happen when I use the USB cable...only with the AC adapter.

I'd suggest that this is a fault, and that you would be best off returning the unit for a replacement. You might run into trouble selling it in its current state.

As to content, you're right that the industry has not got its act together yet. If you're prepared to venture into removing DRM and format-shifting, I suspect that there wil be the content available that you want. You mentioned music theory, and Amazon, for example, has a range of ebooks on that topic.

Yes, that's what I said.

That's true...and that's where I've been buying my books for quite some time. But first of all, many if not most are not available in electronic version, and if they are it's my understanding that they would be available in the proprietary version for Kindle. Or do I misunderstand?

That's true, but not necessarily the end of the story.

I've attached a short story that you might want to read for the exciting plot line and deep characterisation which, incidentally, tells a story about someone in a similar situation ...

Have you got Adobe Digital Editions? It's free, it's available for the Mac, and it will let you read epub files there - as well as allowing you to purchase Adobe DRM ebooks etc. The file is an epub which you can read on your PRS900 too.

Adobe DE doesn't work, or it does but the file won't open, or it doesn't open on the PRS900?

I can't open the file using my Mac. Adobe is loaded, but I still can't open it.

The PRS 900 is boxed up and put away.
