Works also on DR800S !!!

Hi,

due to problems with polish characters with standard reader I installed the FBReader attached here. Works like a charm on my DR800S.

BTW: there is strange behavior with standard DR800S reader:
the ePub with polish characters inside html's - UTF-8 coded is displayed with question marks "?" in place of some polish characters. But html extracted from this ePub and displayed directly on reader shows all characters fine

So you got the reader to open a .html document or did you repackage it into another ePub document?

I don't know what is going on in your case, but when I made a web page with mixed asian and english characters, the asian characters would not show up correctly unless I included some meta information in header to indicate the character set of the page. Perhaps something similar is missing from the original epub document. Also, I would suspect the dr800's ePub and HTML viewers are completely separate programs, with the former from adobe and the latter from webkit and there is a bug in one of them.

Yes, mobile Adobe Digital Editions does not use the usual Linux font engine but only fonts it knows about explicitly. So the problem is that the built in Adobe font does not contain polish characters.

On some other Readers it is possible to add new fonts for mobile ADE. Since the DR800S is relatively open (e.g. has a SDK) it should be possible to discover if this is the case with its build of the mobile ADE. In addition, it might be possible to provide a global user-level CSS. See Needed: Customization for ePub, which applies equally to most implementations of mobile ADE (there is now a hack to allow Sony Readers access to a userStyle.css, and the Bookeen Readers have an ePub customization menu).

Did you use the old 0.8.17 port? FBReader 0.10.2 is also ported here.

@Mackx - I'm using the old 0.8.17 port. New is not working on my device - I can't start it - nothing happens when I click with stylus or buttons into FBReader icon.

@badbob001 - I play with my own prepared ePubs, plus some polish public domains ePubs. I think @wallcraft is right. I have also similar answer from iRex support.

Until we receive the patch from iRex it's place to play a little. I plan to test:

1. use ePub with css having some well known linux font - e.g Courier
2. try to test @wallcraft sugestions with user-level CSS.

Maybe I'm alone but I like the standard iRex reader.

BTW I plan to install iOn SDK on the VMWare Ubuntu 8.04 virtual machine. iRex don't recommended this but I have no choice (I have no spare machine). What is your experience ? What about Ubuntu 9.10 ?

In Starlicy's video review, she mentions that she used a program called ePub Builder to embed fonts into an ePub. Not the idea solution but better than not being to read a document.

Tada.....

Following the topic: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58901 I just installed fonts on my SD card

Small adjustment inside TEST_defaultnewfonts.epub:
- replace -> /abook/ to "/media/mmcblk0p1/" in the template.css
- edit the defaultnewfonts.xhtml (add some test line with polish characters plus convert from pure ANSI to UTF-8)

and I have polish characters on my iRex DR800S with the standard ADE reader. First step done.

Sorry for a little bit of topic discussion.

Great. Now we just need global style sheet support to get this to work on all epub documents.

Tomorrow I'll send the link to our discussion to iRex support (with my open ticket).

Now I have to start to install SDK. I hope it works on "VMWared" Ubuntu linux.

It's been working for me using VMWare Fusion 3.0 on a Mac to get an Ubuntu environment setup and running the SDK with it. Working fine with me as long as qemu isn't trying to use kvm.

Going even more off topic here. The SDK works fine under kvm running instance of ubuntu 8.04 which runs the emulator under qemu in the instance.

Must now actually do something with it.

On 800S I stumbled across the full screen feature where pressing the flipbar hide the iRex navigation screen at the bottom.

Anybody got any ideas on how to enable this for the pdf viewer, nice to have that extra bit of screen estate.
