As I could not decide if I wanted to read the next Millennium instalment right after The girl with the dragon tattoo I decided to try *20th Century ghosts* by Joe Hill, (I very much enjoyed the Heart Shaped Box).

Am about 25% in - some very strange & creepy stories here.

About 3/4 through this now. A very good collection of stories. I have read the Lois McMaster Bujold before, but there're excellent shorts stories I haven't from Anne McCaffrey (Ship Who Sang sequel), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game prequel), Alan Dean Foster (Commonwealth story), John C. Wright, Robert J Sawyer and others.

With the 25% coupon, it's currently only $5.71 to club members at Fictionwise which, considering that the paper book is $10.17 (+shipping) and that even the cheapest second-hand copy is $7.97 (including shipping), is a bargain.

Just finished "On the Beach" - Nevil Shute - just as moving as I remembered it - one of the first "post-nuclear disaster novels" to focus on individual human reactions to nuclear Armageddon - now I want to see the movie again.

Have you read Orhan Pamuk's Istanbul? I'm in the middle of it now and I am really enjoying it. I lived in Izmir for 3 years and I have a Turkish wife. That gives both of us insight into the book that gives it an extra dimension.

I haven't yet read anything else of his but I really like his style. My wife read Red in Turkish and she didn't like it. She said there were some gay abuse scenes she didn't care for. But, I'm looking forward to reading more from him.

I just started "A Study in Scarlet" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I downloaded the Sherlock Holmes Omnibus from here ages and ages ago, and now I'm starting it. I'll be doing some skipping around as I've read other parts of it previously (still whining that we don't have the books available individually - I had to zoom to medium text which took about ten minutes and drained my Reader).

The movie version of "On the Beach" is (IMHO) best watched as part of a cold-war triple-feature:
  1. Failsafe
  2. Dr. Strangelove
  3. On the Beach
After watching all three of these, you'll probably feel like going out and jumping off the nearest bridge. But the trio does a pretty good job of conveying the general feel of the Cold War to those who didn't live through it. I tried it out on my nieces and nephews

I agree with including Failsafe - IMHO - one of the strangest but finest movies on this topic. But I've never been able to watch Dr. Strangelove - I just can't stand its humor/approach.

The reason to have all three is for the progression from "almost a nuclear war" to "What good is a doomsday device if you don't tell anyone about it?" (er... having a nuclear war, that is) to "AFTER a nuclear war." One could always replace Dr. Strangelove with some other movie that depicts the run-up to a general exchange of nuclear love-taps—it's not in the list because of its humor, but rather because I just can't think of a better movie that fits the bill.

Now reading "The Circular Staircase" by Mary Rinehart, downloaded from the MR library. Not the kind of mystery that I like, particularly (reminds me of Agatha Christie), but nice enough.

I'm now going to read an Agatha Christie mystery — Lord Edgware Dies. I've had the paperback on my bedside table for a couple of months now, but never got to it. But since I've just bought it from Fictionwise for $0.95, I'll read it next and retire the paperback.

Finished "Truly, Madly" by Heather Webber, (and I highly recommend it), and "Town in a Blueberry Jam" by B. B. Haywood. (Also really good if you like cozy mysteries). Now I can't decide what to read next. Mt. TBR is threatening to take over my hard drive, and I bought two new ones today: "Sink Trap" by Christy Evans about a former corporate drone turned plumber's apprentice, and "A Slice of Murder" by Chris Cavender about murder amongst the pizza fixings, LOL. However, I also need to catch up on Hank Phillippi Ryan's series, (Prime Time, Air Time, Face Time, Drive Time), and I've still got two more in the Lorna Barrett Bookstore mysteries to read...and one more in the Kim Harrison Hollows Series before I can read tomorrow's release of "Black Magic Sanction".

So many books, so little time!
