I tried to read a book by one of our contributors here, but found it to be absolutely horrible in execution. (No pun intended.)
Diplomacy (and being a Moderator here), forbids me in naming this horrible novel. All I can say is this: AVOID IT BY ALL MEANS. The next best thing I can do is to tell you to beware (and be wary of) a writer of occult/horror fiction who frequently sells the book for less than retail. (Of course, the retail is a jacked-up price, anyway.) The rest you'll have to figure out for yourself. There's a lot of self-published trash being circulated now, and readers must be careful. There's also a lot of self-published gems being published, and readers must be just as careful in deciding what to read in that area. Be aware....or be afraid, but not because it's supposed to be a horror novel.... Don Last edited by Dr. Drib; 02-21-2010 at 05:47 AM. |

Dr. Drib speaks the truth.
I, too, have also tried to read a book from a contributor to MR. I'm too gallant to name the novel or author. All I'll say is that paragraphs are your friend and swallowing a thesaurus doesn't make for a good read. Also proofread and then proofread again. Then give your novel to someone else and gt them to proofread it. There are some good self published works but they are outweighed by the bad. Publishers do make great gatekeepers sometimes. |

After I've started to write a little (fan fiction and only for the fun of it), I've learned so much about good - and bad - writing, that my patience with mediocre writing has diminished greatly, and I now have much more time for good writing (which I also appreciate much more). Most of the self-published I've sampled hasn't been worth my time. The little I've liked I felt could improve with editing. Good editing is a craft that's almost as valuable as good writing.
