The only Anti-virus I use on my systems and recommend to others is Kaspersky.

I'm able to get Symantec Endpoint 11 from work for a very low cost. It does a great job blocking virus and spyware as well as trojans and key loggers. Plus its firewall works well.

I have it on a Asus Eee PC netbook because its cpu overhead is very low.

FWIW, I've just installed Calibre 0.6.42, and Norton 2010 is fine with it. Contrary to previous opinions, I very much like Norton as a virus scanner.

AVG Free woks well if you tame some of the settings (Some, only if you can recognize the signs that mail or links may not be exactly what they seem).

AVG Free is bloatware these days. It's noticable slow. When they made the shift to version 8, it became bloated and slow.

I really dislike an AV system trying to tell me what it is I want to run on MY system. Ok, fine, it can tell me there may possibly be an issue and if I want to tell the program to ignore the issue, it had better do it. Norton is also bloated and slow. So sure, no reason to really use it.

The main problem with ALL anti-virus and firewall-type software is that you have no choice but to use one or other of them. They all interfere with what you want to do, they all take up too many resources.

Having said that McAfee, Norton, AVG all drove me to distraction years ago. I switched to Kaspersky Internet Security about 3 years ago. KIS is also huge, but MUCH less annoying than the others. It is also a good price and the support is pretty good.

I've no plans to change (when I used the others I was ALWAYS looking for an alternative).

I have been using Norton 2009 and now 2010 with Calibre for over a year without problems. I believe that suggesting the original poster trash their antivirus (which they probably paid good money for) is an unacceptable solution.

Dear OP:

- If you have uninstalled Calibre, re-install and run it.
- Open Norton main screen by clicking on its icon in the system tray.
- In the "Computer" section, select "Settings"
- Under the "Exclusions" section, select "Exclude signature"
- Click "Add", and select "calibre" from the list
* OPTIONAL: I would appreciate if you would next select "Risk Details" and send me a message telling me what it says under "Risk Type"
- Click OK and if it asks you any "are you sure" type questions say yes.
- calibre.exe should now be restored from the Norton "vault" back where it belongs.
- Run calibre.

** If the above does not work, there are other configuration options that can help. This problem can be solved without uninstalling Norton.

Dear Norton Haters: I too hated Norton for many years. but as of 2009 they released an all-new antivirus that is not the CPU hog of former antivirs. I was using AVG free, but it was letting too many baddies through. Norton caught them all.

I did significant testing of AVG, AVAST, Kaspersky, and Norton before making my decision. I tested CPU load, I tested virus detection, and I tested ease of use. Since I bought a 3-seat license, I chose Norton over Kaspersky because I found Kaspersky configuration to be too confusing for my less-techie family members.

I chose Norton. I respect your decisions regarding your choice; I expect the same in return.

Lest anyone dismiss me as naive, technically incompetent, or behind the times based upon my selection of Norton: I have my degree in computer science. I have been a hardware and software designer for aerospace equipment for over 20 years. I bought my first computer in 1976 and have been active in the on the internet since before it went public (ARPANET). I maintain MAC, Linux, and Windows computers at home. I do computer virus removal and file reclamation as a side business. I write for leading computer magazines.

PS: In my testing, AVG 8 and above are more CPU hungry than Norton.

No chance. Slagging-off peoples choices of antivirus is as much a god-given right as scorning choices of OS (puke) or web browser (gag).

I agree with your AVG cpu comments. One of my low-spec PCs would virtually stop when AVG decided to update while scanning large files.

The are moving all our work computers to this from what I've been told.

I use McAffee here, it seems okay and was free via Comcast.

Thanks for the constructive suggestions

As said previously the problem was with the Sonar protection, it identified Calibre as being high risk for I think *file operations* (can't remember for sure now) when I dropped an ebook on it and immediately quarantined it.

The pop up gave me the option to re install and exclude from future scans, which as I trust Calibre I chose to do. The next time I ran Calibre it did exactly the same thing so I chose re install and exclude again.
This time it allowed Calibre to run but objected to a module within Calibre, (which I can't now remember), which I also chose to exclude.

I can't find any way to un choose the exclusions so I can't replicate any part of the problem. Nor can I find any reference in the history anywhere of the quarantine or reasons for.

Norton has never objected to Calibre on a full system scan.

It is running without objections now.

Now seriously.
If you find a Linux distro that you like you do not need to use antivirus, firewall, antispyware, antimalware anti-something stuff. You can still keep on a separeate partition Windows, just do not let it to see the network card.
