Sorry. Connie and Dan are both acquaintances of mine. His "Hyperion" was that way. It just stopped at the end of the book, to be continued in the next one. There was no indication that it was only the first part of the story on the book or by the publisher etc.

I felt totally deceived.

I was totally into it and it's well worth reading but I would wait until the second book is nearer to being published.

Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson - Second time through. Read it years ago in hardback, but I think I'm enjoying it more this time. Nice to have the dictionary available when Neal uses big words I don't know.

A People's History of the United States - Howard Zinn - This one is thanks to a discussion here on MR. Interesting take on US History.

Witches Abroad - Terry Pratchett - Love Terry's Discworld books.

Oh, and about 80 more on my Kindle...

It's funny, but I never felt that way with Hyperion. I actually always felt it was a standalone book, much like Neverness by David Zindell. Sometimes I like conclusions that aren't conclusions.

Cheers,
Marc

I think it's one thing to leave it to the reader to conclude but another to just stop telling the story.....there were certainly mixed feelings about Hyperion from the reading community.

Certainly there may have been - I don't really pay much mind to community attitudes except for a portion of guidance on what to read rather than what I have read. But I guess you could say my feelings were on the sweet side to the sour in the mix. It's my favourite Dan Simmons, up there in my all-times, almost to the point where the subsequent books were superfluous (again, like Neverness).

Cheers,
Marc

There's a huge difference, Kenny, between books in series and 'serials', I think.

My own wee house won't touch 'serials' and insists that books in series must stand alone and that they can be read in any order. You see, shit happens.

For instance, an author of ours (the admirable Ron McLachlan) died suddenly last weekend while still working on the third in a series of novels. It shocked and saddened us. But, as far as the reader is concerned, he's not left them wondering what comes next. His first two books are perfectly self-contained and satisfyingly complete.

Few agents and publishers will look at a series of books from an untried and tested author. I certainly wouldn't. It's far too heavy a commitment -- and you'd be amazed how many submissions from inexperienced authors come in as 'part of a series -- currently working on book two', as though that's a selling point. It's actually the kiss of death.

Even with known and trusted authors who leave some threads dangling in a book to be tied up later, many publishers and editors (I'm one of 'em) won't run with one book until the follow-up is safely in house.

Cheers. Neil

Try "The Piano Tuner" by Daniel Mason, a beautifully rendered story with background of British occupation in Burma in the late 1800's.

Starting Tin Roof Blowdown in audio format.

Does anybody else have series of books that they will only consume in audio format? I love the Dave Robicheaux series in audiobooks because of the narrator's LA accent.

Same goes for the Stepanie Plum series. Perfect for driving because it is light and the narrator's NJ accent is perfect.

But technically, that's not reading. That's listening.

Hence, the use of "consume" instead of reading!

After much grief trying to buy a copy I Recently finished *The girl with the dragon tattoo* by Stieg Larsson.

Having been warned the first two chapters were a bit slow, I found the rest of the book a terrific and entertaining read - very highly recommended!

5 stars from me.
